I doubt I'm a "great", but before I retired this is how I earned my living, yup. And it's how I supplement it now, photography and book design, plus some editing work.

Kelly - if anything you DO do portraiture better or as well as anybody on this site. You capture people's essence in natural situations, yet you make each one a different work of art. I say go for it.

I had 2 people ask me if I'd do senior pictures - I said outside only, and no cheesy stuff, which is exactly what they wanted. And I don't have half the skill or camera you do.

My Dream Team

bear_music: amazing landscapes and a seemingly boundless knowledge about everything
Strikeslip: Some solid photography. And just imagine the antics
Kpriest: Another solid photog, and ya' never know when you need a village burned!
NightSky: she shows real potential, especially after her Beverages shot
Chit: Just in case we need a rake shot ;)

We might not me the most refined team, but boy would we have fun!!

Damn, I'm so good, I'd hire myself 5 times.

You rock Mick!!!

I'd hire ya in a heartbeat, Mick. Just cuz you're so awesomely cool and take rad pictures. :)

you do rock!! :)

Gee, thanks Cristin! I'd hire you too, but you have to bring Ronce along to hold the backgrounds. My helper has her own camera now and can't be bothered any more. :)

I am surprised not to see theo38 or dr Jones on any of these? We need to incorperate nudes and boudoir. Thanks for the plugs for me! I could pick a bakers dozen of photogs I would want on my side....probably 2!

There's definately the skill floating around here at DPC for many to make photography a profession...it's determination that drives those who are successful to that success...and not always skill (although some is always needed).

Jutilda, roadrunner, taterbug, laurielblack, Rikki, CalliopeKel, palmetto_pixels, and some others I can't think of because they have great sense of humors - senses of humor? whatever.

Yeah, sure, most of those on my list are great photogs as well, but being a sycophant, I had to go with what I might get the most real benefit from by posting their names.

*** adds "sycophant" to his growing list of pretentious words learned on DPC ***

First I was like "Whoa!" and then looked up what sycophant meant then I was like "Ohhhh". :D

Does this mean I have to give up my seat on the couch in the other group? LOL!

I want librodo's portraits, bear_music's landscapes, scalvert (and EddyG)'s creativity, DrJ0nes' nudies and graphicfunk's studio.

10/24/2005 02:01:31 AM · #110
Lets see, my standout photogs are...

heida - her style is one of a kind, the moods she creates in her shots are deep and powerful
jonpink - havent seen him in a challenge in ages but he work has always been inspirational to me
pedro - the master of dodge and burn, need i say more?
librodo - captures the soul in his portraits
moodville - shadows never looked so good
DrJones - nudes anyone?
arnit - his images gleam with exquisite polish only he can achieve
graphicfunk - his ideas are extraordinary, and he is such a nice guy to boot. One of the friendliest people here on dpc.

Honorable mentions to the young celebs
Joey Lawrence - joey, joey, joey... dpcs very own child progidy, remember that with great powers come great resposibilities.
Zoomdak - one rock, a zillion pictures. His landscapes are amazing.
Elsapo - young, talented, skilled and creative. Doesnt have as high a profile as Joey but is someone to keep an eye on.
Annah - the female joey? Only time will tell. She certainly has the style and talent to take on any challenge(r)
Konador - "VH1 where-are-they-now special"... hasnt won a ribbon yet in 2005 but with his witty ideas and pictures is someone you shouldnt count out of the race.
Nightshy - another up and comer. Came very close to her first ribbon a few challenges ago. Someone to watch out for.

Others -
Xion, grigrigirl, goodman, kirbic, jjbeguin, terje, tyt2000, falc, e301

I've tried and can't. There is so much talent here that anyone who has studied these ports will be nonplussed. However, there are some photographers who have left a deep impression. But this is not the same as making a list of five favorites. If the site consisted of 100 members and one's taste was limited then 5 are easy to pick.

LeslieGoodman. What a broad wealth of interesting images. An artist.
BradP. A wide collection of visual goodies captured effortlessly and retaining a pristine charm.
Kiwiness: deftly application of concept and execution.
Librodo: Untouchable in capturing the portrait.
Labuda: a camera magician indeed.
Jacko: a consumate technician.
EddieG: penetrating images to exhibit a concept. Meticulous.
Scalvert: Looks here and there and suddenly delivers a winner unrelated to anything before.
Nshapiro: seeking essence behind the subject.
Xion: images that come from very deep.

And of course the young vibrant talent of Joey Lawrence and El Sapo.

Now, I can go on and on but I think you get the idea. There is more than meets the eye in the corridors of DPC. The above is not to downplay anybody else. If asked to name my top 100, then I would feel I can do the list real justice.

NOOOOOO!!!! ...oh well, I already gave up the futon in the other thread. I do realize yer just sucking up to me because you need someone for collection enforcement. ;-) I'll take what I can get.

On a slightly serious note - I would agree with what some have pointed out about the business aspect - your most gifted artists are not necessarily (and maybe rarely) are good business people. And vice versa.
10/24/2005 08:14:47 AM · #113
Ok ok - since I obviously didn't answer the first question about creating a business and just created a stock agency, I'd like to try the "business" half of this now.

Me &
1) Methos
2) Skiprow
3) Setzler
4) Grigrigirl
5) DrJOnes

All are professionals, all do their jobs. All would contribute in the way of "business ideas" as all run their own business or are getting into this business. It would run like a law firm - partner style. Setz and Skip would get the editorial stuff. Setz would also do fine art. Julia and myself would do portraits and weddings, Julia and DrJOnes would do glamour and nudes. Methos and myself would do stock and Methos would do commercial.

I echo what skip said - "if you sit on your ass worrying about it, you never know."

Everyone I chose for this list has proven themselves already - 5 of the 6 of us already make our living from photography and shooting. Why not choose the established?

LOL, deapee, if you ever have the good fortune of spending a day with Joey you'll learn what a well-grounded, down-to-earth guy he is. No big ego at all. He's very polite and considerate of others. You're statement is WAY off base, oops!

I haven't met bear_music, but from reading so many of his posts I'd expect he's also a very down-to-earth person.

Incredibly, I see I'm in a few lists! Thank you very much, I'll take a spot on a list whether I deserve it or not, but that's my big ego!

Hehe, good point, John... well-grounded, unless he springs straight up into the air. ;-)

I'm like Dan - I don't think I could do this justice without listing at least 100, but here's a stab at a few in no particular order:

graphicfunk: studio genius, mentorship
scalvert: innovative and complex setups
KeithManiac: Kapan
nico_blue: B&W
JoeyLawrence: the dark side
AnNaH: young talent
elsapo: macros
librodo: portraiture
arngrimur: because I like everything he does

Honorable mention to: Jutilda, CalliopeKel, smilebig4mex1, dahkotah, JPR, jenesis, arnit, Mandy, Strikeslip, heida, grigrigirl, goodman, etc...

There's enough talent on here to take over the top 10 photographic agencies in the world...

I'd like to think I am, yes. I confess to feeling a certain frisson of annoyance at the referenced post. I wonder if people confuse having experience and opinions with "being egotistical"? Be too bad if that were the case... I mean I could shut up, and nobody would consider me an egotist then, but how would that help the site, or me for that matter? Sheesh...

What started out as a nice, light-hearted "what if" thread has turned into something a little darker...

Some people just get ticked off that their name isn't showing up or that the same names keep popping up I presume. Most of those selected by others in this thread are one of two things or both: 1) they are accomplished photographers or rising stars and 2) they share with colleagues on this site with criticism, hints and encouragement. For those who have been selected: Bravo! Keep up the good work. For the rest of us, we still need to work at it, continue learning and continue sharing.

That's it.

Take care.

I've been skimming through this thread and saw my name mentioned a couple of times surprise surprise!!! I have also noticed the names of who should be mentioned (basically everybody else who was mentioned). I am in agreement that everyone mentioned would be excellent choices as well as many others who haven't been mentioned. I must admit that bear_music would be on my short list because I truly admire his ability to capture spectacular landscape images. He also is incredibly knowledgeable in photography as well as many other areas. Basically he's just an all around interesting guy.

As far as the comments about egotism are concerned, there may be just a slight element of truthfullness to it, but not in a negative way IMHO. Joey, Robert, and many many others should have a little ego when it comes to photography. It's well deserved!!! For me, a healthy level of egotism is merely a reflection of confidence in one's abilities. These photographers have proven again and again that they have the ability to capture awe-inspiring images. I think the term "ego" shouldn't be viewed in a negative light (always). Granted, true egotism (aka cockiness) IMHO can be viewed as a condescending attitude and superiority complex towards others, but I don't feel there is a single photographer on this site who falls into that description. A certain amount of "ego" is perfectly healthy. It allows an individual to feel confident in sharing their knowledge with others with less experience. Personally I put great weight in the comments made by the so-called "egotistical" photographers, because they know what the heck they're talking about. IMHO, egotism is perfectly acceptable. So to all you "egotistical" photographers, I welcome your comments and your "ego".... Just don't go gettin' cocky on us! ;-)

If I was going to embark on a working relationship with someone, by choice, then it would have to be a mix of talent, vision, and personality. Someone could be the best photographer in the world but if they are someone I could not work with due to a clash of personalities then I would choose not to form a relationship with them. Not a good business model, perhaps, but I've never claimed to be good at that.

Based on the above my five choices would be:

crabappl3

Talent. Danny shoots varied work and could cover any particular subject or theme, but he excels with portraits and weddings. To some they may appear to be lacking in exotics but not all clients want that. He is able to deliver just what clients want with a professional attitude. On top of that he is a crazy individual who sings Garth Brooks, tells bad jokes, and has a huge heart. Plus I couldnt imagine starting any venture like this without him.

Sher

Vision. Sher takes the ordinary and makes them extraordinary. Maybe not the most commercial but her artistic renditions are still very marketable and I could see her images adorning many walls. Her style and how she sees things is very similar to my own so I could certainly see her vision as complimentary to any business plan. She also has a unique personality with great taste in music and movies (except the zombie films).

Pedro

Connection. Pedro connects to his subjects whether they be people or horses or everything in between. His images communicate on many different levels. His portraiture is great whether it be staged or candid. He's also a very funny, quirky guy and I think working with him would be a total blast. Plus he knows far too many attractive people!

grigrigirl

Eclectic. Julia has a very unconvential style that almost oozes decadence. There is definitely a bohemian feel to her and a strong sense of New Orleans flows from her work.
