That is the question!
How about a choice when you enter a challenge of:
I want opinions/comments/suggestions
or
I do not wish to receive opinions/comments/suggestions (as in "I am so happy with this shot I really don't care how you would make it better, if you think it meets the challenge, or what your opinion is.)
This choice would show up under your entry during voting.
Many people want comments, myself included, but when I leave a comment I often get PM'd that my opinion is incorrect. I have compared my comments to others' after a challenge, and there is usually at least one other person that has said the same thing. I am not an experienced photographer, so I usually leave comments on composition, basic lighting or other obvious problems--including does not meet the challenge. I did not leave any comments today while voting, but if the entry indicated a desire for comments I would share my opinion. Am I the only one getting wary of making comments?

you know what... i make comments so that the photographer can hear what other critics think. if they don't like them, unless they are really bad or filled with critisism, i don't see any problem... i'm going to continue

I think a lot of people are wary of making comments...I have 190 votes on my picture and only 2 comments...I want to learn but if people won't comment I can't learn anything...very confusing... |

and then, while recieving a 4.1, the poor sap who disabled the comments suddenly post's in the forums: "argh, why can't I turn comments back on!!!?!?! What are people thinking?!!?!?"

I try to make alot of comments, however you do not necessarily learn from them. I learn more by looking at the winners and seeing there images. Learning PS and just watching. Sometimes comments bring out what I did not see in the image. Thats helpful. But I believe I learn more from all the other DPCers. I do want as many comments. However, most only say good things when my image is barely over a 5. I score first, comment on the top 10 images for sure and the bottom feeders. At least the bottom 20 on my list. Hopefully to help them see what I see. |

Speaking of comments -- I thought it was interesting that everyone (or nearly everyone) in the wide angle challenge got a comment from someone named "philup" that said "Awesome....Great job..!!!"

Trust me... there are problems associated with receiving comments that makes them annoying in some cases. I would love to be able to turn off the ability to leave comments on certain photos. |
