My BAD!!!! Here I thought this was a ~community~ of Photographers hanging out learning, talking and supporting ~each other~ as we all grow and do what we love in this thing called life. Granted the topic kinda wandered but there is nothing saying it couldnt be brought back is there?? Smilin' GOSH!!!
N E 1 wanna hug?

Either way regarding the growing pains. A lot of good, talented photographers have left here for a number of reasons. Also a lot of good, talented photographers are still here. Also a lot of future good, talented photographers are here. So either way I am good. Life for me gets busy now from time to time and I do other things as I am sure we all do. I still enjoy coming back every now and again and checking things out. I still check to see what contest are going on.

Welcome back Julia. I'm sure some things in your life will never get back to the way they were before Katrina, but I hope the toughest of times are behind you. And we all look forward to seeing some challenges entries from you soon.

If everyone is so concerned about DPC and community etiqutte... why not send an e-mail to all new users and members explaining it to them, instead of flaming them in the silly threads that annoy you so?
Hate to quote Larry Flint but: "Majority rule only works if you're also considering individual rights...."
Frankly, it's the right of everyone who becomes a registered user to post, and also their right to make a fool of themselves.
Are we going to get so uptight about what annoys us that we end up cutting off discourse and learning? Most of the "look at me!" posters are very new indeed, and if someone simply took them under their wing with a friendly PM, you could avoid a ton of consternation and ruffled feathers. Better to explain that they should post asking for help, not votes, instead of ignoring them.
People need to chill. The more laws you have, the less freedom you afford yourself.

Thank you for that! I'm new here and have been intimidated by posts like this. It's made me afraid to publicly ask for help. I find myself wasting time trying to learn the proper etiquette expected of me rather then learning how to take better pictures. I guess it's like a new job, the old timers are set in there ways and they expect the newcomers to conform to fit in. I agree, you should pm a list of proper etiquette to any new comers that is out of line. Nobody enjoys public scrutiny 1: the act of examining something closely (as for mistakes) especially if it’s of a personal nature. I admire the work of many of the folks that have posted on this thread. I hope in the future I ‘m able to admire the unselfish positive people that created them. |

Considering that you placed in the top 10, and have a higher score on your first entry than I think i can hope to achieve in a timely manner, I'm having trouble thinking friendly thoughts about you right now. :o)
But thanks for your support.

This was a very good reason for the Individual Photo forum - NOW give us the choice to TURN IT OFF! And we'll be all set. JUST like rants. |
I'm finding this whole thread pretty funny. The whole reason the Individual Photo forum was created was because this very same arguement was raging back about 2 years ago. And had been for a while. And, as you say, was created specifically so that people could turn it off.
I don't think I'll have the time, but its tempting to go searching through the forums from 2-3 years ago and post a few links to some of the nearly identical threads that ran back then.
I say again: nothing's changed. (Well, except some of the players.) |

Don't worry about it. If you have questions, ask. I'm pretty sure that's not what anyone is complaining about in this thread anyway. |

Right, although searching for your topic first is always a good idea ... : )
My "complaint" is specifically related to images which I consider to be tantamount to "extra entries" in a current challenge. Posting of images on unrelated topics for feedback or assistance is fine. |

Good advice....
I'm entered in a current challenge. My friend that got me involved with this site suggested I post an out take in a forum to get some feedback. (The picture's are of two different things.) I had just finished reading this thread and told her I better keep to myself; I don't want to step on any toes. She has been a member of this site for a while and this upset her. I wanted to add my 2 cent's for what it's worth.
I am, as you can see computer illiterate. (Can’t figure out how to quote you properly) Joining this site is the first thing I’ve done on a computer besides emailing friends. Yes I crawled out from under my rock:) I spend a lot of time just learning how to speak the language. My eyes are as fresh as they get and thought you should know the way the subject in this thread was handled seems harsh. I ‘m learning it’s a different world in here, being anonymous seems to empower ones voice. It’s something I will have to adjust to. Anyway, I hope to learn everything this site has to offer and in the process how not to annoy anyone too much. Much respect.

Welcome -- I can see how this thread might be difficult for someone new to the site and speaking (computer) English as a secondary language.
This site's a great place to get help on making your photos better. It's just my opinion that those which relate to the challenge currently being voted-on should wait until the voting is over, to be fair to the participants who have entries, but can't discuss them. |

I'm not sure I do understand the frustration, Paul. I know it annoys you, but, I mean, can't you just ignore them? I really don't see how that sillyness detracts from the voting. It's a users/member responsibility to get the votes done. If some tool posts a silly "gimme votes" thread, just tell them no every time. If people are really voting, how are they seeing the post anyhow? Well, because they wanted a distraction from the voting of course, and went looking in the forums to clear their head a little. Without forum sillyness, this site would be very boring for me indeed, and possibly even tedious.

There's a limited number of thread slots of the front page, and a limited number of comments people are willing to make. I'd prefer those go to people who aren't in effect double-dipping in the current challenge.
I've never understood why it's OK to comment on out-takes during the voting -- it seems that would by its nature have an influence (or be intended to) on the current voting, a practice prohibited by the rules. If you post an out-take for comments, and it's similar to someone else's entry, I'd think that would have some influence in the votes that image gets, in one direction or another.
I don't see why everyone's so defensive of the right to post a "second entry" in the current challenge -- that seems like a no-brainer prohibition to me. You're welcome to post anything else. |

Gimme tedious and boring please. Most of the sillyness is simply someone's ego on display.
I think GeneralE has a legitimate point. Be reminded that the mission of the site is to be educational and informative, aimed especially toward the less experienced photographers. The challenges are the device we use to keep us motivated, and to measure our progress. Entertainment, sillyness and egotism have many other addresses available to them on the internet.
