There is a picture of an old Victrola though...

I am definitely enjoying the twist shots more than the traditional shots. Not because the traditional "technology" shots aren't good, but because I don't find CDs and circuit boards as aesthetically
pleasing as photographs as some of the more unique shots.

Get any artistic interesting blurry out of focus out of depth field shot on here, you will get nailed. :)

Okay, I'm confused now. I took this picture this morning.

Okay, I'm confused now. I took this picture this morning.

It is just a cliche shot. A macro of a bunch of flowers. But I used
motion blur and a really shallow depth of field. Am I just damned twice
now, offending the people who don't like bunches of flowers and also
the other camp of people who don't like blur or shallow DoF ?

Maybe Dante had a special place for people who take these kinds of pictures ?[/i]

In my experience, yes you would be damned on this site. :/ It's a great shot, but the first comment you'd get would be "the petals are out of focus."

I think people put way too much emphasis on the technical aspects of photography here. Just because exact focus (for example) is possible shouldn't make it a requirement. Photography is not an exact science -- it's an ART. Because Picasso's portraits aren't exact representations of human beings, does that make them less asthetically pleasing?

I'm not really complaining...just stating the unfortunate truth. Fact is, not everything will appeal to everybody. If you have a shot that you absolutely love and it doesn't do so well and that hurts your feelings, you probably shouldn't be posting in the first place.

Let me ask you, Gordon. Did you take the above photo for yourself? Or to attempt to please the masses?

I've never commented on someone's photo that it was cliche (one man's cliche is another man's brave new world), but I do find many plain straight on pictures of flowers to be boring. There are many beautiful ones too and I myself am fond of trying to take good ones. Mostly I think it is because it is hard to make a photo of a flower as beautiful than the flower.

This one however does not fall into the boring category by a longshot. I think the angle and short depth of field are what really make the photo. You would get more, not less, points from me if I was rating this for an appropriate challenge. It's a gorgeous shot.

It's obvious to me that this shot was artistically and technically well
executed. What makes it obvious to me is the sharpness of the stamen. Without that sharpness, I might not have know if it was intentionally out of focus or a lack of focus due to technical problems. I think your photograph is beautiful.

Most will agree that pictures of "sunsets" are deemed cliche. Yet, when I see a beautifully executed photograph of a sunset, I get as excited about it as though I am seeing a sunset for the first time.

I think mediocre photographs are cliche.

Absolutely for my self. Playing with using flash and longer exposures (hence the motion blur on the small daisy-like flowers). I don't think I
take any pictures to 'please the masses' really - it isn't like I'm trying to make a living doing this so it is all for personal pleasure. If others happen to like them then that is great.

I've promised myself I'd stay out of these types of discussions, but I need to stick my nose in to say one thing...

That is one damn fine cliche you took Gordon :) For the record, I'd hang it on a wall...
