Hello! My first submission was "from the ground up II" and I did not know how to lower the K to 150 without shortening the sides untill after the entry, so I submitted a small image. I was just wondering how much of a difference the size would have made, as the photo is rather ordinary.
here is it full sized: photobucket
and here is what I submitted: |

I scored it a 6. VERY high mark for such a small image (based on my normal rating scale), but I felt it had some really good qualities - I just wish I could have seen more of them. Glad to know you've gotten that little quirk straightened out and I look forward to seeing more of your work soon. :-) And yes, it would have scored higher from me if it had been larger. |

Small images and patriotic images score poorly. So now that you tried both those and got them out of the way, things are looking up.
As for the larger shot, the sky color looks good, detail ok but the contrast is a bit much. Don't think the border helped on this one.

the large version had a lot of noise - i didn't use the basic editing rules. but made a blue selection, and blurred it. resized to 640 pixels on the long side, and saved as a high quality JPEG image.

Technically nice image, and didn't really lose much from being scaled down due to its clean simplicity... but god, what trite subject matter! I reckon that's responsible for almost all of your 1's rather than your image size.

So trite it's almost evocative. |

small images always finish in the bottom 10% just look at any given challenge and the brown is almost exclusively followed by "too small" comments.
The "size matters" effect didnt hurt you as badly as it would some, because you can still tell it is a good crisp image.
That said, people vote with thier feelings too and this is a global site - not everyone loves the american flag, infact, many are quite put of by the patriotic american.
There is a tutorial in the blue menu bar about resizing under the learn/ tutorial options if you are still having problems. |

haha. thanks for all the comments, guys. I knew when I was submitting it that the fact it was an american flag would get it some low marks. I'm not that patriotic, but I loved the lighting on the flag, and the swish it had in the wind.

acctualy, I stumbled onto it right after the submission dead line. My coffee shop entry is full sized.

cheap point-and-shoot camera + the added shake of the hand = noise. Know any cheap DSLR cameras? Thanks for editing the photo. It looks much better with what you did.

wow. thank you very much! I didn't even think it was worth a 6 as a large image.

It's the title that does it. Just when you've searched over the image for some hidden cunning trick, and found none, you look down to the title, a gleam of hope in your eyes, maybe it'll be something witty or clever... nope, instead a right literary and aesthetic kick in the teeth.
Aside from that, as i keep saying, the image is actually really well executed :)

I think I'd like it better rotated so the pole wasn't angled.

The framing looks odd because it's about the same size as the flag pole itself. |
