I'm thinking about getting a small camera, partly to carry while biking/ running - so size is one of the primary issues.

I'm considering the Pentax Optio S, or the Dimage Xi

Any experiences in favour or against these ?

Well, I don't know how compact you want it, but I have a Kodak DX4900 and I love it. It is the camera I take everywhere with me. Picture quality is great and I'm not planning on getting rid of it any time soon.

I have an Optio S... I don't have enough knowledge of the other cameras to give you an expert opinion, but having done plenty of research on the other cameras before I bought, I can safely say that I am DELIGHTED!
Check out my profile to see what you can do with it.
I do briefly wonder sometimes though whether I should have bought a Minolta F200, because of the shutter and aperture priority modes, but it is substantially bigger than the Optio. The Optio is head and shoulders above the Dimage Xi from what I can gather.
I'd be happy to answer more questions about my camera if you need me to!

Thought I'd add some more comments... how many cameras are light enough to fit in a shirt pocket and not weigh it down? My Optio S will fit in any pocket and can be completely forgotten about until needed. It is TINY! The quality is pretty good (some of the reviews talk about distortion at the edges on wide-angle), but I've never found this a problem. It turns heads! The one let down is the flash, which is a bit harsh and is too near to the lens so frequently causes red-eye. However, there's always photoshop for the red-eye.

Another one I've considered (though slightly larger) is the Canon Elph/ Ixus S400.

It looks pretty good too - any experiences with this camera ?

I don't know about the S400 but I have one of the first S100's at 2 mp and I love it. I was at a ball game once and accidentally dropped it on the concrete and I thought for sure it was ruined but it only got a couple minor scratches on it and that was it. Fortunately it was turned off so the lens was retracted. Nothing broke and it still worked perfectly. My sister dropped it another time and the CF card door broke but it still worked perfectly. I've since had that fixed and it is as good as it ever was. I think it takes great pictures for it's size and so I can imagine that one of the newer ones with higher pixel counts would be awesome. I'm sure many of the other cameras could be very good as well. Just make sure the one you get can take some abuse and has the features you want.
