I have been working on my child portrait techniques with help and tips from the great people at DPC. Here are a few recent. Let me know what can be done to improve these please.
Thanks

I'm no portrait photographer... but I would make the suggestions to move them away from the backdrop a little more, and straighten it out a little more (the wrinkle is distracting to me). The colors look good, and the kids' expressions are cute. Some seem to have a bit too much noise reduction but overall they're better than what I could produce. :)

Just two quick notes from me:
1. Lighting is a little harsh. You definitely want softer light on your subjects to control the highlights and skin-tones. There are many ways to do this, including but not limited to diffusing, bouncing, and reflecting your light sources
2. Background. Try and keep wrinkles and folds to an absolute minimum. There's one main fold in your background that is *very* distracting. You'll want to try and find a way to minimize or eliminate this.
Other than that, these are some really nice poses and expressions. One of the hardest jobs with child portraitures are getting them to look natural, or relaxed. You've done a nice job with that. |

Yes a bit too much noise reduction.
I have struggled with do I give contour to the backdrop or flat... hmmm.
DOF is a challenge.

Those are darling poses. Kids are so much fun to shoot and so unpredictable. I tend to agree with the other comments on the backdrop and softening the lighting some. The only thing I might add is the little boys shirt is so close to the same color as the background. Perhaps just the white shirt or another overshirt would have worked better. Very cute kids and it looks like they have personality plus. |

I like them all, but my favorites are the last one of the girl and the second one of the boy. I think your colors are wonderful. The lighting is not dramatic, but I don't think it's too harsh either. My biggest criticism would be the neat image (and maybe smooth out the background a bit.) Other than that, I think they look great. |

I like 3167 and 3170 a LOT. Those two shots will be treasured by this child many years from now. |

Thank you all for the great comments and suggestions.
For the backdrop, I find that if I cannot quite get the proper DOF and achieve a nice blurred effect, the "curtained" look helps.
This is the first time I used Batch mode with noise ninja and it seems to have went a little far with the smoothing.
I am using two stobes for lights. One is high and is bouncing from the left. The second is eye level shooting through the white umbrella. It appears my "fill" flash is set a bit hot by the shadows with the glasses.
This was a completely impromptu shoot. My sister-in-law was over with her kids and I got about a total of 5 miuntes for these shots.
