I had a request to do some senior portrait shots for a friend's daughter. My studio membership had expired, so we were limited to outside shots.

I would really like some comments and critiquing on these. I gave her some suggestions for wardrobe and makeup, but I don't think she ended up wearing any makeup at all (that I could tell?) and the wardrobe was probably not the best of choices. The only other real drawback was her smile was a bit tight...she has really thin sort of lips. She's not a natural in front of the camera. Lovely girl, loads of fun - and I hope they are happy with these.

Anyone? I'd sure appreciate having an objective measure of how they look. Somewhat professional? Sloppy? Dark? Nicely done?

Shall we try this one more time? DPC seems to be moving along better for the moment. It's a little frustrating today trying to comment on anything.

The link is to that PBase gallery, and you can always leave the comments there instead.

I'm not going to give any technical critiques as I'm not equipped to do so. However, from a "consumers" standpoint, I think they turned out well. I think you're correct in that the girls smile was a bit stiff and make up never hurts, but on your end, I think you did a wonderful job, photography wise. I would buy them :) (if it was my child that is, lol)

Thanks Laura. I suppose it's natural to always want a beautiful, exotic model to shoot, but that's just not real life. This girl is absolutely a tremendous person and my goal is to produce some photos that make her feel good about herself. I just love taking a person's picture and then hearing them say "Wow" when they see the results. At the same time, I want the photos to still look like them and not be over edited.

I like e, f, and p. I can't really draw any conclusions about the girl from the images, but my choices are the ones which are the most simplistic compositions, p in particular. That one feels nice to me with the diagonal.

J and K seem to be a bit busy with color, and the rest just feel like traditional posed photography. E and F create a more intimate view and probably speak louder to me than the rest...

They are lovely shots overall. Personally, I think a little lipstick would have made a world of difference on the lips, even a bit of gloss, something to make they stand out a little more. Also, she has lovely eyes but they again, get lost, a touch of mascara would do wonders. Doesn't have to be a ton, just a touch. I like the black and white shots but without something to make the lips and eyes stand out, they blend in too much.

The poses are great, the clothes are fine, the model did great, as well as the photographer, I'm sure the parents will be happy with them and if not, ask if you can re-shoot but really insist on some lip gloss and mascara if nothing else. Tell them it doesn't have to be caked on, just a touch to really make her eyes and lips stand out and to bring out the natural beauty that is already there.

The only other thing I would want as a parent is a few more close up shots of the face, your basic head shots per say.

Otherwise, great job!

I think you did an excellent job. The images are all very crisp and the color looks amazing. The locations for the most part are pretty and/or interesting. They look very professional.
Sure a little makeup would help (who wouldn't benefit from even just a little?), however, you want to capture who she really is, and if she doesn't usually wear it then....
Also, she may not have known how to put it on correctly...and there's nothing worse than a photo ruined by bad makeup.
I honestly had a hard time picking which ones I like best. But I'd pick b, g, a, j.

Beautiful work, Judy! I love them all, especially c, k, and n.

I wanted to give you a link to an article I read last year in Pop Photo about how to shoot a more full-figured subject...being one of them myself, I found it especially interesting how you can choose different angles and lighting techniques to flatter her best features, and not emphasize ones that she otherwise might not like. You can find it here.

Great work, though...as a mom I'd be tickled to have any of them! :)

I think she as a model, is very tight and uncomfortable, but the pictures are great for what you had to work with! I love your maternity pic

Thanks for the link. I like that it is very basic and very easy to understand "how to do" without a lot of photographic jargon.
