So subjective.... 7+ is a fantasy at this point! 6s have me giddy (and if things hold up, I might get my second one this week!). 5s have settled in for "average" for me. Low 5s is where I start to get a little discouraged, and below 5 and its definitely bad.
Of course, how bad "bad" is depends on the shot. My matrix shot, I put a lot of work into, and was disappointed at a 4.5. My Home Sweet Home was a last minute, shoot/resize/post picture, and it scored better (barely) than my Matrix shot! And, really, it sucked, photographically! It was just sentimental. So I thought 4.5 was a "bad" result for my Matrix shot, but was reasonably good for the effort that went into HSH. |

Below 5 is bad for me.
Low 5's is a little disappointing.
High 5's is good.
6+ is where I want to get myself to consistently, rather than the occasional challenge I mangage it in at the moment.
7+ is outstanding.
8+ ... I am a photographic GOD, you must all bow before me, I am all powerful, bwahahahaha!
Oops, sorry, got a little carried away there ; )

Scores are largly irrelevant to me, Im here to challenge myself and try out new stuff, and that means making shocking mistakes (this weeks is <4).
If I wanted to get huge scores each week, I'd whip out the fog filter and stick to misty morning scenes in sepia. |

I try not to look at 'score' as an indicator... I try to look at placement in the rankings of the challenge. I think that anything in the top 25 or 30 finishing places is pretty good. |

That's awfully cynical... maybe to some people, whipping out the fog filter and misty morning scenes in sepia is a new challenge. Let's see some of your misty morning scenes? |

This is incredibly disrespectful to some very fine winning photographers, especially from someone who has not evidenced that level of ability.

i would like to be able to get a 7+ on every single shot. i thought i was on the way to that when i got 4 7's in a row recently, but then i got a 4.5 :P.
So I should probably be content to try for a 6+ on every shot. This week, I am getting a 5.5 .... So much for that.
I've only broken 7.5 once, and I'd like to do it again.
My all-time goal is to break 8. I think there are less than 10 shots in the history of the site which have.
edit: there are actually 11 shots which have broken 8.

I think getting better than 7 consistently is my goal, anything over 6 and I'm reasonably happy. I think setz has the right approach with looking to finish in the top 25ish.... but my competitive side won't be happy until I get a ribbon or two.
Having said that, I also want to stop entering for the sake of entering on each challenge. |

If everyone scored the same way. We would have alot more accurate, consistant scoring. One person may think a 5 is good, while another person may think a 5 is bad - barely a passing grade, or not good at all. With this mix of different scoring opinions we have very inconsistant scoring.
-We just need a standardized/defined scoring system. |

I have to agree with Setzler. With this group (btw... this IS an amateur site folks!!) a score in the mid 4's generally can be considered average, a 6 is great and anything above a 7 should probably be hung in the Louvre. Where your shot ranks against the hundreds of other submissions and what comments are made is more telling of how others percieve your piece.
Cynical? Yes... but I've learned to not just take a shot for the challenge and not take the rest too seriously.

Me? Awake before mid-day? With my reputation?
Ok, maybe my comment was cynical, and possibly a bit disrespectful. I may accept this challenge, just as soon as Ive worked out what this a.m. thing is.

Actually we have a very consistant method of scoring. Because the score is a cummulative one and because there is a grading curve it all works. If your average is 7 and mine is 5 then the site average will be six. But the six itself is irrelevant. The winner has the highest score - whatever it is - and the 100th place has a mid score, whatever that is. With a lot of voters the kinks get all averaged out. |

Jak - I'm a little confused given this comment, below, from you in respect of my own request for someone to show a little civility.

I'd like to remind people that it IS possible to state one's opinion about someone else's efforts without using such hurtful language. Expressing yourself in this way does nothing to keep forum discussions civil and can be quite offensive. |
Once we start telling people how they can express their opinion, we might as well have the ayatollahs ruling us.
I would also point out that you state something as an absolute ("Expressing yourself in this way does nothing to keep forum discussions civil and can be quite offensive") that is really just YOUR opinion. This is a far more offensive and egregious problem in my opinion than anything eloise (who stated everything as HER opinion) did. |

I like to land a great photo (you know the kind. It drives the adrenalin). Although I think I've been close, so have many others.
As far as scores are concerned, I look at it as a pleasant distraction. The popular vote is often quite contrary to my evaluation and, particularly, taste. Sometimes, although rarely, a shot is entered, which 'does' get the laurels it merits, IMO. When this happens, I am confirmed in my conviction that 'magic' is a universal phenomenom, able to conquer all manners of 'taste' and predilection.
My own voting of other people's work is consistent with the way I expect my shots to be ranked: 7's, 8's or 9's are reserved for 'very' rare occasions. They're special.
I give 1's to photos which I feel are an embarrassment to to anyone intent on doing his or her best and only then, when there is visible evidence of a 'careless attitude' on part of the operator or if I deem either the capture or the title as 'offensive' to a civilised nature.
In other words, if you get anything from a 2 to a 10 from me, you have my attention. Between 4 - 6, I'm usually engaged enough to challenge my own judgement. :-)

For my own pictures, I think anything above a 6 is a good score. Anything below a 5 is worth complaining about. 5-6 is a grey zone where I go back and forth between wishing it would get up to a 6 and hoping it doesn't drop below a 5. ;P Oh the stress of it all! |

I appreciate all the answers to this question. Now I'm more at ease with my feeling that anything over 5 is acceptable. But my goal is to beat my best score consistently. |

My own primary personal goal is to get a 7.0, get a ribbon and retire my camera while I'm in first place.
My second goal is to beat my top rated shot (6.67 I believe).
My third goal is to beat one of my top 4 shots and knock it off my list.
My fourth goal is to score well - that to me is:
7=amazing.
6.5=very high, much happiness.
6.0=excellent shot, glad I did what I did to it.
5.5=eh, could be worse.
5.0=bare minimum happiness.
< 4.9=unhappy, why did I submit this?
