Not so sure about my scores, they're a bit up and down sometimes......but my photography and confidence have improved.
I'm now shooting for the local community paper, selling prints of some of the photos I take, shooting stock images, been asked to be the photographer for the local stock car track for the next season (not paid but I can sell the pics to the drivers)...
...and the series of sad animal images I've worked on for the spca (where I work) have been used to raise awareness (and very importantly funds as we don't get govt/council funding) Campaign is a great success.
My confidence in what I'm doing is growing. My ability to self-critique is so much better....... LOL I look at what I've done and can imagine the comments/critiques and scores the pic would get!
and this is all down to the helpful comments/critique/support I've received here at dpc.
DPC and the community here ....they ROCK!!

let's see...
average last 10 = 5.6901 with 27 favorites
average first 10 = 5.6145 with 73 favorites
(and there are 116 inbetween, with 615 more favorites, not bat for a guy with an overall average of only 5.5561)
Not so much worried about numbers. I would say I have improved in some areas of photography, mainly getting out there and taking more!

I think you hit the nail on the head there JPR. Getting out and taking more pictures is the ultimate result of belonging to this site. And how can you really go wrong there? The law of averages, feedback, and volume of shots you take are all 3 very strong indicators of improvement. (I think I conveyed what I meant...) Anyway, I'm extraordinarily happy with the results I have gleaned from being a member of this site. I know that I personally would not have improved my perception of what is appealing and how to photograph it more desirably than here. Now, whether or not that is personally appealing to other people is certainly up for debate, but I'm very satisfied with the knowledge I have gained here. It doesn't mean that I have to agree with everything that I see - or that is lauded - here. It just means that I have a better understanding of it and I can use that to my advantage when I am out on a shoot (however I may interpret that advantage to be). :-)
EDIT: Took out unnecessary sections of quote.

I believe my photos are getting better but I am still getting slammed on the scores. I have done nothing in the last month but read forums, follow along with mentorship threads, try out the ideas and study my camera and yet I still cannot get a 5 vote. I doubt that I will be submitting for challenges for a while because I put my heart into this one and I don't think I can take people voting it down and making comments such as "your title is too long". (It's a photographic competition people!) I think the main thing is that I know my knowledge has improved and I know a lot more about my camera, which will be sure to show in my photographs. My family also gets to fill up their photo albums which they love! |
With all due respect, get out and shoot. Enter what you shoot. When you've got 10, or 50 or 100 entries, then you'll have a sample size that will demonstrate improvement (or not.) But with 2 challenge entries, I suspect you are seeing noise, not signal. |
