Did anyone else notice the crazy amount of CA on that 2nd image?

Is just me, or is there some very noticeable "CA--IE Purple Fringing" on the Wired Gate shot?

Yep, there is a ton. Use a action script to remove it.

edit: i read it wrong... I didn't understand it was converted to 136mm because of the 1.6x crop...

FYI: those are examples of narrow DOF not Bokeh.

Tree frog: That is a very hard image to look at. It gives me a headache and appears to shake on my screen.

I agree.

I often wonder about the term bokeh and what exactly it is. I mean I know what people think it is and have read about it quite a bit. But I still think some drunk photographer was questioned on his photos one day and how crappy they were and he said "No, that is bokeh. Don't you know anything?"

I always understood Bokeh to be the way light appears in the background. Good Bokeh being soft edges around light and not harsh borders of light. If that makes sense.

Anyone, if I'm wrong feel free to correct me.

My understanding is that bokeh refers to the quality of the "out of focus" areas. So shallow DOF is showing off bokeh. The grate is 100% crop of the raw file...

Bokeh is good when you have an out of focus background, causing circles of confusion!

That's confusing.

So we haven't had one of these debates since the last Bokeh challenge.

Quick definition from Ansers.com below.

BOKEH

By the way, bokeh is subjective. It is only good when it looks good.

You have to careful how you use shallow DOF. The image is hard to look at and the OOF foregound grabs your eye and leads you below and past the frog to the OOF background. Your eye does go to the frog because it is in focus, but it keeps being drawn back to the foreground which gives the illusion of being in motion.

bokeh refers specifically to OOF points of lights. These usually show up as circles in pleasing bokeh but can also show up as pentagons, octagons, or even donuts. It's one of the most commonly missused terms. It's just one of the things that irks me... :-/

Your going by what Ken Rockwell says? Well if when saying points of light you mean that everthing that registers on a sensor is made of light then perhaps that would be one way of putting it and perhaps that is what he is saying.

Simply put, the word bokeh is a transliteration of a Japanese word for "blur" - describing the subjective aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas of an image.
