Could someone please give me their opinion/critique on the ad I'm trying to put together for class. Would you expect to see something like this in a magazine? If you had to give it a mark out of 100 what would it be? Non Smoking Ad... nicorette icon to be added later |

as a non smoker i dont really understand why the pencil is in there .... i would see more of a nasty mess in an ashtray - maybe with an regulator - to help me breathe better than a pencil ... but i do like the concept

I like the shot very much. I really like the way the shadow looks like a regular cigarette in the ashtray. I wish there was a way to have a ribbon of smoke coming from the shadow to really make it realistic. The "V" formed from the shadow and the pencil point to the ashtray and the mess in it. That being said, I have a couple of concerns...I worry about the Nicorette logo making the whole thing off balance. It appears that it would have to go in the lower left corner and that would really weigh down that side in my mind. The other problem is that I don't "get it" As Ayme said, "as a non smoker i dont really understand why the pencil is in there". It doesn't do anything that I think would make a smoker quit. Just my 2 cents. I hope it helps. |

Photography wise, it's a great photo. If you REALLY want honesty, here is how I feel. I'm not really sure what the message means though. I'm a non smoker, and I don't really see pencil shavings in an ashtray. Ever. So, the ad would need further explaining to me. Maybe it's just me though. I like the placement of the words, and the placement of the picture. It is very nicely set up. The words aren't squished around the picture. Visually, it is very appealing, Just not sure what you mean by the message. Hope this helps at all. ~Heather~

Do you think a different caption would help?

ok that's cool ... then maybe the words could be different ... when i see a pencil it reminds me of knowledge and school ... so maybe reference something related to wasting money on cigarettes and spending it on knowledge and education or something - just an idea :)
(hopefully that makes sense) email me if you want a better explaination or if ya want some help - photosbyayme@yahoo.com

Maybe you could do two pics adn have them side by side. One is your pencil shot (great pic, btw) and the other is a really nasty looking cigarette and ashtray. The nic. ad could go between them, and you could simply ask something like "Any questions?" or say something like "Your choice." If you wanted to keep the "What a non-smoker sees" thing going, you could have the pencil one for the smoker, and the dirty one for the non-smoker.
Just a couple of thoughts

I'm sorry - but add me to the list of people that don't get it.
It is a well taken picture of a pencil in an ashtray with pencil shavings. But I don't get any other message.
I used to smoke. I quit 5 years ago. I don't get it.
Maybe a better image would be a rolled up 20 dollar bill with the end as smouldering embers. Point out the money going up in smoke aspect of it.
Another one would maybe show attractiveness going up on smoke, or health - not sure how to get the imagery in there though :)
If its meant to stop kids smoking, health benefits don't mean anything to people who believe that they'll never get old or feel pretty much immortal.
Money might. Attractiveness might

oh I see what you mean... have two images juxtaposed so that the viewer gets the point. one image is with a cigarette and one with a pencil.. but that way they get that there are two views for the same thing/same message. Thanks :) |

My interpretation as a non-smoker was that you might as well be smoking a pencil, cause we don't see the point in burning a tube of paper and dried plant and inhaling either. :-D Not to offend any of our smoking friends here. Okay, shutting up now...... |

Do you have PS or PSP? they can add the smoke to the pencil image. Or you can reshoot with a real cigarete and then cut and paste the pencil over it. |

I think Gordon's suggestion of a twenty dollar bill smoldering would be a hands down winner. You could probably do it using PS without actually having to burn the bill.
As for the pencil shot, sorry, but add me to the 'don't get it' list |

Feel free to plagarise my Garbage entry if you like.. I tried to get the "Smoking Kills" message across with that... Ironically, I smoke.. |

My take on the message was that each time you use the cigarette (pencil) the future possibilities get shorter until there is nothing left at all.
I guess I over-think sometimes :-)
