I so badly want to get a gmail account!
Does anyone have a spare invitation they could send me? Or is it too late for such things? |

I can if you like... I still find yahoo to be a far better all around email provider. Email me at eschelar@gmail.com if you want me to send you an invite. I check email daily.
I personally don't much care for the layout in gmail. I like my email accounts neat and tidy, but it is too much trouble to delete stuff in gmail. I hate stuff just hanging around. It makes me feel like I have a messy and cluttered desk.
Also, there seems to be little to do with all that space. I use most of my space in yahoo for my online albums. I still haven't come near the 1GB mark yet. Gmail doesn't offer online albums.
You can use a little program I once found called GDrive that allows you to keep an online drive in emails via gmail, but it isn't that useful in practice.

Do you have Outlook or Outlook Express? You can set them up to check your gmail account and if it is deleted from either program you can always go back to the web and retreive it. |

WOW! That was fast!
I'll start at the top of the list with Neil.
Thanks for the overview, eschelar, I just keep hearing so much about it and I really need a new account. I have felt so left out! |

I have about 50 invites still, and I just check my gmail in Outlook Express. Every so often I'll go to gmail and delete everything in the trash folder. I don't find it anoying that things stick around (it's just like the recycle bin on my windoes XP machine). |

I know nothing about gmail but am curious - why do you need an invitation to sign up for the service? |

It's supposedly still in beta so it's invitation only. Which doesn't really matter since everyone who has it has like a bajillion invites. |

Actually, they've opened it up now - anybody can get an account. If you have a cell phone that is:

2 Things really stick in my craw about Gmail. First the fact that you have to be "invited"... what is this the internet velvet rope? And more importantly that they read your email. Scanning for viruses is one thing but evaluating the content is another. |

Joe,
I agree with you on the no free lunch thing. I was willing to put up with ads etc but reading my content is over the line. Unless you are paying full value you have no rights. Even here at DPC you really have no rights - it's not a democracy and 2 owners set all the rules and change them if and when they see fit. |

The invite was only for the "BETA" period. They've now replaced it with the need to confirm via a TXT message to a cell phone. (Or to a friend's phone.) This is to eliminate the mass creation of emails such as 2fdsd34@msn.com that SPAMMERS use. And although it may seem invasive it is an ingenius idea for reducing the gmail system as a SPAMMER option.
The second, as I understand it, it's all "indexed". SQL does the same thing to a database. By index'ing they can more easily find your search results.
They may do some rudimentary demographics as well....I do not know. But this goes on at every Circuit City, Sears, etc. They track who comes in, what you buy and send you catalogs accordingly. |
