I was wondering if anyone had some tips on still photography

As with much photography, I would suggest that interesting and effective lighting is essential. The best light source I've used is simply the sun.

Most of my still life photos were taken on my porch on a bright day--but in full shade. I get a lovely, directional light that is usually bright enough so I can play around with lots of photo elements like dof and shutter speed. Here are a few of my shots from the porch or garage. Again the sun is just outside of the camera's range; I'm barely in the shade here:
