Don't rely on photoshop to keep your images clean!! If your images are displaying dust spots either clean your sensor/or lenses or have it cleaned for you.

As far as I'm concerned images with dust spots show a lack of camera maintenance by the owner/operator.

I'd love to say A; I've had shots that I kicked myself for not having cleaned my sensor. However, it would be a nightmare for the SC to try to figure out what is sensor dust and what is not.

I vote B.

B - dust is an occupational hazard. Clean the camera first, then shoot.

...to order a cleaning kit and use it really isnt so difficult!!

I can't believe anyone would actually choose B. Basic editing rules alreay give us enough latitude to trash a photograph, but not enough to fix minor imperfections in the image.

B for the most part,

However, if A were chosen then the rule needs to be stated that only dust spots can be removed and if the SC determines that more than dust was cloned out the shot is DQ'd. Meaning, that blade of grass, that's in the way, has to stay.

Given the current setup on DPC, 'B' is the only realistic option.
07/27/2005 09:59:48 AM · #64
I believe that it's better to clone out sensor spots rather than constantly clean your sensor.

BBBBBBBBBBBB

If one is allowed to do that, some will also extend the "dust removing principle" to other elements, thus, been given the chance to aplly advanced editing techiniques to basic challenges!

clean the sensor!!!!!

It's unlikely that we could limit spot editing to sensor dust... people will inevitably apply the same logic to hot pixels, a hair on the sensor, a fly that wandered into the scene, etc. As Heida's ribbon winner illustrates, sensor dust isn't going to kill your score anway, and you can PS whatever you like for prints or other purposes.

I have read all the posts and still have to go with B.

I agree with the sentiment: clean your sensor.

Clean your sensor once a week or so to make sure there is no dust. Do the same thing to your lens surfaces. This way you can participate in weekly challenges with strict editing rules and not have to worry about spots. You can also expect to replace your camera in a year or less when the sensor fails. You will probaby make some nice soft focus lenses out of what you have now also.

A little extreme, don't you think? I clean my sensor about once every 6-12 months. I do clean the lenses more often, but I do so gently with a lens pen or a little Eclipse on a pec pad. There is no need to keep your sensor totally clean for basic challenges, as the voters tend to look beyond that (Heida's latest ribbon).

I've had my camera for over a year and haven't cleaned the sensor yet. The spots only show up in certain photos.

A. I don't agree with the argument that it will take the SC too long to check. There are plenty of people here who would agree to add themselves to the SC numbers to deal with it.

I don't think allowing spot editing for dust specks would be too hard to check- I just don't see the need for it. The voters have clearly demonstrated that it doesn't matter, and enforcement of the rules is much easier (from an objective standpoint) if NO spot editing is allowed.
