Ditto... and now I've ordered a 17-40. Thank you and curses.
On a side note, Ritz Camera had Epson P-2000 media viewers for $79 on Amazon's website. I ordered one as fast as my sweaty fingers could type and it went through. They just called me yesterday and said that it was a typo and supposed to be $499. Oddly enough, they shipped it, then called me and said that it was just the replacement battery they shipped and that I should just refuse it. Hmm... I wonder if that's REALLY what they shipped...? ;-) |
Somehow I doubt it :P. What can they do if you open it anyways? Whether or not you open it, if they shipped the wrong item I think you still have a right to return it.

I just bought the 17-40.........thanks again Troy. I wish I knew about this last week because I bought a 70-200 at Bel Air Camera for $640 in store after tax and it looks like I could have bought it for $545 after tax from Dell. Damn.
oh well.... I'm done buying lenses for a while now :) |

That may be true, but they could contest it through the credit card company, and I wouldn't feel right about keeping it knowing for sure that it was a mistake. |

Ah, okay - I assumed that the 'ordering as fast as your fingers could type' was because you already suspected it was a mistake :P. You're an honest man (I probably would've kept it =-o..).

"Suspected" and "knew" are two very different things. The page had some kind of "Super Low Price" icon on it, so there was at least a chance it was just a phenomenal deal or blowout. Once they said it was a typo, then I knew I'd be hurting someone on the other end. Still... I'd be curious to know what's it the box. If they lied to me just to get a return knowing that they'd actually sent the player, then I might have second thoughts. |

Troy,
That was such a great deal that Dell sold out of both lenses. I was going to return my EF 70-200 f/4L that I bought last weekend so I could buy it from Dell and save over $100, but they don't have any more. And it's a good thing that I got the 17-40 yesterday morning when I saw your post because that's sold out too!!!
Thanks again! |

Bought the 17-40 on 7/22 and not only has it not shipped, but I got another delay notice that it won't ship until 8/8. :-( |

Ok.... for anyone considering purchasing a lens from Dell: DON'T DO IT!
I am so terribly dissappointed with Dell's service. I ordered the 17-40 f/4 L lens the day it went on sale (see previous posts). I was given an estimated ship date of 7/29. On 7/29 my ship date was changed to 8/5. On 8/5 my ship date was changed to 8/12. Today it was changed to 9/6!!! I have sent several strongly worded letters to Dell over the last 2 weeks resulting in a free upgrade to next day shipping and a coupon for $100 on my next purpose. Both are useless to me. I will never buy from Dell again and what good is next day shipping on something i have to wait for until September? Calling Dell makes no difference. You get transfered to an operator in Bangalore that has no information other than what you get in your delay email. I'm so furious. I have a feeling that they are not out of stock, rather they are delaying orders to try to make people cancel... because they screwed up by offering such a deeply discounted price. Part of me wants to cancel the order and just buy it for an additional $200 at Samys camera in LA, but I am not going to do that.
The most annoying part of this is that I sold my 18-55mm lens on Ebay when I ordered the 17-40 expecting to have a gap at the low end of my focal range for a few days. I didn't expect it to last a few weeks.

I'll take the coupon then if you don't need it! :) |

Dell has truly gone down hill. Horrible customer service. We (myself and Tfaust) are still waiting for ours. Thanks for sharing the $100 coupon bit. I'll be sure to call and get one for myself.

I know it's no consolation, but this is not new behavior for Dell. Folks over at DPReview have been reporting this at least since the end of last year. Dell can have some great prices, but you do need to be prepared for delivery times that can range from a few days to a few months, and no way to predict in advance.

I really love Dell. They regularly have excellent prices on normally expensive equipment (oh crap, they don't carry Nikon).
I've seen Dell have a Mark II for $3400.
My friend bought a 580ex for $324 last week.
I bought a 19" ultra-sharp flat panel for $280.
The prices are great. Shipping times and customer service, not so great. I bought a point and shot digital that was delayed, they gave me a $50 coupon. With some more chatting they applied the coupon to my current order (save even more!).
Bottom like, if you want a great price, buy from Dell with a coupon and wait (sites like edealinfo.com stay up to date with coupons).
If you want it on time and quick, call B&H and pay more.
If you have a Nikon..... Well crap.

It was a great price and I wasn't in a hurry to get it as we weren't planning on buying it for awhile, but other wise I would not buy it from Dell.

Just watch your email. After the first change in ship date, you may get an email which you MUST respond to or they cancel the order, and then of course, you lose the good price! Happened to me when I ordered my XT. Eventually had to argue and then settle for a silver one, even though my original order was for a black one! And it took about three months in all to get it!

I bought one on the day this was posted as well, but had a bit of buyers remorse with bills sitting here, baby on the way, etc. Then I got the delay notice and canceled the order. :(
...but I got like $5k of credit at Dell in the process! Hmmmm... Nah. |

They are not willing to offer me the same thing that tunnelmuck got. Isn't there an attorney general's office we could report this to? Seems Dell is offering product which they don't even have to sell. The gentlemen I spoke to said this product is backordered across the country - B&H must be special then (well they are), but they have it in stock!

I'm waiting too. Oddly, there is no record of this order in my account even though I responded both verbally and via email to the delay notice. |

It's called supply and demand. The demand for this deal was greater than the supply available and Dell is honoring the sale despite the fact they sold out of the item and they are now on backorder.
I ordered the 70-200mm f/4L using the same coupons and the shipment was delayed once and then I did receive it and I am happy with it. I would have been just as happy if I had to wait another few weeks due to the fact it was such a great deal.
If you want to blame someone, blame the very places you discovered the deal... SlickDeals.net, the dpchallenge forum, robgalbraith.com and everywhere else that spread the word about the deal on those lenses. It was because of the large number of people that jumped on the deal that lead to the supply problems.
DELL had no clue so many people would jump on it. |
