I just looked up my order to see when the NEW backorder date would be, and SURPRISE... it's on the truck for delivery today. :-)

Ours still shows on backorder with an estimated ship date of 9/15

I really can't understand why anyone would deal with Dell. It's pretty clear that their "business model" is to advertise things they know they will not be able to deliver timely. And then to hope they can talk the customer into a higher priced item when they get tired of the wait. It's a modern variation of the old bait & switch scheme. And it seems that many here are fooled into thinking that Dell is a reputable retailer. Any of y'all wanna buy a bridge?

Huh? If you order immediately, you'll get the item right away. If you're not among the first, you will have to wait, but it'll ship eventually. It shouldn't surprise anyone that a computer company doesn't have several thousand L lenses stockpiled in a warehouse. They have NEVER tried to get me (or anyone else that I've heard of) to upgrade to a more expensive item because of a backorder. Some people were asked if they wanted to switch to the silver 350D when the black 350D was backordered, but I'd hardly call a color change a bait & switch.

Posting a deal where you know that the responses are going to be far more than your current stock will accomodate, and that many of your customers are going to have wait long periods to get what they want, is basically dishonest. And Dell does it repeatedly.

It's not dishonest, the people all eventually get their lenses at GREAT savings. I wish they expand this to ship to Canada...so far it's only in the US.

Dell didn't post a deal on a lens or camera. They posted a coupon or series of coupons for categories of items. When someone figures out that the coupon works on a particular lens (which may have been unintentional on Dell's part), they often post it to the internet and hundreds or thousands of people rush in to grab a bargain which may be well below street prices. Complaining that Dell doesn't have enough inventory on hand to sell these items (at what may be a substantial loss) just doesn't make sense. If you want it right away, then you're free to shop somewhere else and pay $150 more.

I think it is dishonest. They know what they are doing. It is not an accident, or a mistake. It happens regularly with Dell. It is their standard operating procedure. And it is deceptive. They are offering deals to the public that they know they will not be able to fulfill within a reasonable time.

Either they are dishonest, or incompetent. Not sure what is worse. I'm actually leaning on the incompetent side.

What's really funny... People that ordered after we order ours already received them while we are scheduled for a 9/15 shipping date. Did I not complain enough? Or did they push mine back because I did complain? One would think they would just go down the list and ship them in the order they were ordered. But then one would also think you wouldn't take orders for something you don't have and can't get...

They have the 20d (no lens) for $1124 (25% off coupon) for the first 200 people. Also Rebel XT (no lens) for $700. See link at beginning of thread.

Although their web site still shows us on backorder, we received the lens yesterday. :-)
