I'd be happy getting over 4.7 - nah, just kidding - I could care really and when it's over, you'll see why.
(is under 4.7 though )

haha...some people have seen mine and happily disagreed with that notion of a high-scoring challenge. luck to others.

My highest by a long way but there's even higher scores .......I seem to have a knack at scoring best in the exceptionally high scoring challenges, now that's frustrating !

I didn't enter this challenge and I wasn't going to vote it either, but then I saw some 'out of the box' thingies and I decided to vote on just the 'common' and 'plain' and 'out of the box' birdies, because they would likely sink low with the average voter and I didn't think that would've been fair. And may all those other fancy birds photos be of the highest quality, I don't think it's quite an effort to go to the zoo and snap some fabulous birds. I've seen enough of them, so I thought to at least give all the plain and common birds some good scores and didn't vote at all to the fancy ones. But it was hard to get to my 20%.
That's how I voted to the challenge birds, because I myself am an out of the boxer too.

Ok, some explanation needed here I guess. I didn't mean to sound harsh here, sometimes the English language is getting in my way to express myself clearly.
What I meant by 'fancy' is just the big colorful birds and I thought they would overshadow the 'plain' birds, though there are a lot of nice pics of them too in this challenge.
If I've offended someone, I'm sorry, didn't mean to.

Someone asked me how I could tell if it was a 'zoo' bird or not.
Well you can't tell always, but it's obvious that a bird wearing rings or bandages or when you see the cages blurred in the background it's a captivated bird, whether it be in a zoo or otherwise and that it is not too hard to make a nice photo of them, because they're not going anywhere. Or am I wrong in this assumption? I merely wanted to put in a good word for those 'plain' birdies, because beauty isn't always in the extraordinary, but often in the simple facts of life.

Mmmmm....I think this Dutchie better keeps her mouth shut and go to bed before you all put me in the corner and make me wash my mouth with soap? :)

Had a good start with mine with over 40 votes and a score of 5.833, but score has dropped a whole 0.3 and has just now slightly climbed. I have to admit that I am one of the "zoo shooters", but I went for an approach that goes away from the "in your face, I was 5 feet away, cropped over 50% of my exposure" shot.

Ribbon winners will have very high scores for this challenge. Guaranteed over 7.5, maybe even 7.7, for blue. Top-15 will all be 7.0+ shots. I'll be lucky if I'm top-60 with my current 5.6324.

I shot this at the zoo, but the bird wasn't quiet close and I cropped to keep only 20% of the frame area. It started well with 6.833 after 20votes, but when I got up this morning it had already dropped by 0.75 in the next 30 votes !!

Hi all,

Finally went through and voted. Great pics! I think I scored as many high as I did for the best of 2004 challenge. Keep your chin up- I think that instead of voting each picture on it's merit, some people must compare to other pics in the challenge- hence, a "7" by itself pic (without seeing any other bird pics) becomes a "5.5" when compared to the super-fantastic shots in this competition. Oh well. {{hugs}} that's how I interpret things.

So far 80 votes and no comments. :( The score must mean I fit the challenge?, but everyone must be so flabergasted with the shot they can't say a think or something. Or it can't be helped. Oh by the way, Brad your ahead of me, I may get my first brownie, :)

Vtruan, same thing is happening with me, very good score and only a handful of comments. I think people can only say, "fits challenge" and "nice shot" about birds so many times.
06/13/2005 03:04:38 PM · #45
I had my score seesaw from 5.7 to 5.95 and then back to 5.6. I thought I had a sure 6+ entry.

What's up with the anti-zoo voting thing. As long as there's no obvious distraction (fence etc.), why should anyone care if it was shot at the zoo or in the wild? Jeez, maybe I should just stop submitting.

May not be doing the best but I think getting comments is really what this is about. Okay, that was a load of BS..... 7.5 would make me feel much better.

There are fantastic pictures in this challenge. I've scored more pictures high in this challenge than any other I've voted on. I'm excited about my score! Hope it holds up throughout the week.

I think you're right. From what I understand, many people vote using the bell curve method - a few 1's, 2's and 3's, a few 8's, 9's and 10's and a WHOLE bunch of 4's through 7's.

This means that most of us are getting lots of 5's and 6's since there are so many strong images. So with this in mind, everyone who is in the 5.0 to 6.0 range can easily tag on 0.5 to 1.0 to their score. I too was sure that my image would be in the low 6's. It's struggling to stay at 5.6+.

dont really care about my score... since how I got the shot was more impressive than the actual shot.... but... no comments... now that part sucks!

I think it's a very nice challenge. I've only seen maybe 4 or 5 pix that didn't meet the criteria IMHO. Other than that...lot's of fun, beautiful images.
