I would be grateful for some help with this photo. Are there any good PS aproaaches to making the boats visible through the windows less obtrusive while maintaining the feeling of the glass on the windows? I've tried blurring but was not successful at getting anything acceptable.

Many thanks.

Joe

I don't think they really present a problem.

It is a bit distrating to me. Maybe you can define the window and then blur it slightly to lessen the defintion of the boats.

If I want to selectively blur different areas, I layer the image in PS, on bottom layer apply a gaussian blur, on the top layer erase the areas I want the blur to show through, or you could apply a glass effect.

How irritating is it? There's always this option.

You might try selecting the insides of the windows, and using Curves or Levels to then fade back (or "ghost") the boats so they're visible, but less obtrusive. In a rough experiment it look kind of like there was a heavy fog outside.

Here is another try. I made duplicate layer, used film grain filter on it, then used the blur tool to make the boat still there, but out of focus.

I like what Christine did with the windows - looks good.

Secondary observation. When I first looked at the version that Christine put up I thought "what the heck happened to this image?". I thought that the contrast was altered and shadows/highlights were played with.

It was the background/framing. Christine's version on pbase displays with a black background making the image look flat and the highlights look overexposed .... in comparison to the original displayed on DPChallenge standard grey background.

Amazing how much the background/framing choice can impact your perception! My two cents. ;^)

I had a go with the image, but without erasing the windows, I used lasso tool to select each window, fixed levels, and burned a little. then I used dodge tool to lighten the items in the foreground.

Do you mean something like this?

I have the Roxio photo editing program and it has a glass texture filter. It may not be subtle enough.

I don't find any problem with the background.
Left you a comment.

Hmmmm... never really looked at that before, since I tried to train my eyes not to go beyond the frame. I just liked the darkness beyond. May have to rethink this now. Thanks for mentioning it. :) - Christine

Well. Thank you all. This has been most helpful and lots of ideas and approaches to try.

I'm somewhat new here so thanks for the help.
