I really hope someone can advise me on this one, in order to send my wntry for the birds competition I need to cut down the size. I have been using photoshop and would need to choose level 1 to save it to achive the needed kb but unfortunately the quality of the picture suffers and I am not prepared to send the photo in low quality. Any suggestions on saving them in a smaller size without losing quality of pic?

Thank you,
Sandy

I've found that sometimes simply cropping a few pixels off each side or making it smaller than 640 (say 625 or 630) helps.

Thank you Karmat,

I know that is what I usually do, but the photo is perfect for me as it is and I wouldn't want to crop it....

If you have a clear sky in your shot, try a mild application of noise-reduction software. Zoom in close and see if there are some tiny flecks of color in the sky area. I've found that removing the noise can remove 30-50kb from the file size.

Making slightly smaller than the maximum is often a good solution -- images above 590-600 pixels on the long side mostly avoid the "too small" comments.

Crop to a 2:1 panoramic if it suits your image at all; 640x320 takes less space than 640x480 or 640x427 (the other common proportions).

Use a little less sharpening. If you have a detailed image, sharpening will markedly increase the file size needed to reproduce it. Either sharpen less, reduce the JPEG quality setting, or some combination.

In Photoshop, if you are just a couple of kb off, make sure that when you SaveAs (I use SaveAsCopy) the final image, you check the box to "Exclude Non-Picture Data" -- that will chop off the few kb that the EXIF and IPTC info use.

Also, if you are just a couple of kb off, and you don't mind borders and have a detailed image, you can apply a 1-4 pixel stroke around the outside.

Can you resize again from the original, and make it a little smaller?

GeneralE, I have found using neat image will make my image bigger than smaller...unfortunately

I thought I had it, now the pixel size was okay but the actual length and with wasn't and if I change that the image becomes teeny weeny and I don't think that is right..... :(

Since you're using PS, 'save for web' works really well. Just optimize for file size of 150 or just below and set the image size so the longest side isn't more than 640.
