First rule of photography.
You have to go somewhere to get the picture. Every single one of us have went to our back yard hoping to take the "award winning" photograph. but then realize its not going to happen and go back inside and make a bowl of lima beans.
that is all

There's no "here" there, and there's no "there" here; the images float in space ΓΆ€” they are neither here nor there. Lima beans are the anchors that keep our souls sane; the images are the signals we send to God.

How right you are.
Went out for a walk just now, didn't come back with ribbon material.
Made myself some pancakes. |

I think it's a common misconception that you have to go somewhere in order to take good pictures. Opportunities are around you just need to see them. If you are always thinking you cannot take good pictures unless you're somewhere like Yellowstone or Alaska then you'll never produce good pictures. Work with what you have and not what you think you need. I've read many times that when you're in a very photographic location like Yellowstone that almost everyone can get at least one good picture out of it. The real trick is getting at least one good picture when it isnt all about location, location, location.
Lima beans are good! |

I think it depends on your style of photography. Some people are great at setting up amazing shots in their house (not me!), some are great at urban candid shots, some are great at landscapes. If you like taking photos of landscapes, then you have to get yourself out of the house and to interesting places at the right times of day. You have to find the places that suit your style of photography the best. Sometimes they're in your backyard, sometimes you need to travel. But yes, you should always strive to make the best photos out of the most uninspiring locations, it's a good discipline. It's interesting to look back at my photos since I joined DPC 2 years ago, and look at all the locations I've made an effort to travel to that I wouldn't have bothered with if I'd not taken up photography.

Some locations are very inspiring and might suit you preferences and style better. The results of shooting at such places can be very satisfying and result in one shot only = top 10. Just shoot where and what makes you happy. When the subject matter is interesting for you, you have a greater chance of creating something good.

Sometimes it's not bout wandering around at all. I spent an hour sitting next to a pool of water in the woods yesterday...I thought I was done when another photo op occurred and I spent another hour in the same location. It's all a matter of getting yourself to "see"...
A side of garbanzos for me, please. |

Oh it's been so long since I've had lima beans, butter beans and black eyed peas. Umm
Your mind is your canvas, the location is the raw material and your camera is the brush. You can make something of nothing anywhere you are. |

It is not about the images not being close to you, but rather your inability to see them since you have become desensitized to them.
You may be looking, but do not "see".

I believe you must make a concerted effort to "go" somewhere, especially somewhere new. Because then photography integrates itself into your life making it richer in many more ways. It has allowed and forced me to go places I have wanted to go, but was just too lazy or busy to visit. Even if that new place is just 10 yards outside of my building.
But then again, some people need no motivation to explore. And some people don't like lima beans.

The way the light hits the grass, effect of water droplets on individual blades, the things you can find hidden like chewed balls or hidden treasure, birds, bugs, bugs, and more bugs, birds eating bugs, butterflies that land on the plate of orange slices you put out there in order to entice them. |

You have to be careful about that leaving the confines of your own domicile... What would this place here be without pets, siblings, toy robots, water dropplets, fruit and the likes?
There is just way to much out there that doesn't meet the challenge. Way too many pictures to sift through only to find none meet the challenge...
I went out yesterday to look for a Construction shot and immediately got sidetracked by all the other really cool things that go on in our world...ended up forgetting that I had an obligation to DPC to meet the challenge...
I think I will call this Flower Deciding to Construct it self creatively
I acutally think that my brain got scarred yesterday while I was out to the local Heritage Days Festival yesterday (people dress up like Cowboys and Indians)... there was this girl (not dressed like a Cowboy or Indian) who happend to have just enough material to cover her bum, well I was minding my own business eating the traditional Brat that they sell at these things and the girl bends over right in front of me to hand something to her kid (yup she was pushing a kid in a stroller) and holy moses...Well I just had to point out to the wife that the women had no skivvies on... She spent almost 2 and half hours there pushing the kid back and forth and bending over about every 10 feet...
...man I hope I don't run into that again, there has got to be a dandilion in the back yard that I can shoot.
(no there are no pictures (I pointed it out to the wife a tad bit too early))
