Funny that this suggestion comes up now. The photo I entered in the Lighting challenge was inspired by a painting that was bought by a museum in Ottawa way back when I was a student there. There was a big hubbub about it, because it cost a lot, I forget, a couple million? It was simply three stripes. That was back in the late eighties or early nineties, I can't remember for sure, my dimentia, you know. ;-)

The two million dollar stripe. It's still in the gallery and still doesn't make any sense. Remember this is the gallery that also bought a dress made from a side of beef.

The effect in your image is a little over the top (colours don't feel right) for my tastes however I can see the connection to the painting (if you can call it that) referred to.

I really like the challenge idea and I agree with Neil that this should be a basic editing challenge.

I took this in Feb 2005...I like the texture even though it is a little dark

My image of a painting, in which I deliberatley sought a "painting-like" look, scored badly last time around (for undisclosed reasons - I presume because people thought it was heavily processed, but I only received compliments - where have all those critics gone?)

In any case, I really like it!

Nice idea - and like Nshapiro I think it should be basic editing. And thanks for the mention Justine. : )

Here's one of mine that struck me at the time when shooting how oil-paint like the scene was:
.

There are some great shots I haven't seen before in this thread.

Count my vote for basic editing as well.

WOW!!! some of the images posted in this thread are fantastic. I think a challenge like this would bring out some brilliant work and would also bring out a few of the highly respected long-term members that have been a little quite lately to maybe have a go at this and enter a basic editing challenge.
The phrase that comes to mind is "shooting a painting" it's something I heard a long time ago and has stuck with me.

did this one few days ago
im not sure if i succeeded here
think its close (but no cigar)
good practise anyway
used a bit of grain only besides the spot editing stuff (and than tried to dim it with other tool!?)
anyway i think its fun to try and get that painted mood inthere
i guess i have always wanted to be a painter than..but the patience i dont have that (yet) but this might be a satisfying 'surrogate' to try and do it this way
