For the "Late night" challenge I decided re-shoot the rock in the pond across the street from my house, which got "mixed reviews" in the recent "Rock, etc." challenge.
Here is the shot I entered

This time I shot it without a roll :), and as I expected it fared a bit better. However, I was tempted to enter another shot

(which I actually like more), but I was afraid to enter it since I thought it was too dark for a large percentage of monitors. Do you think I made the right choice? Is the outtake too dark?

I think you made the right choice. For me its not about being dark, but I find the submitted image better in terms of composition and overall light effects. Just the rock looks like a more dull subject and doesn't quiet work well ( for the challenge topic )

you most certainly made the right choice!

I can see your outtake photo just fine, but don't find it interesting at all, plus there is some weird noise (?) in the background, too.

Your submission, on the other hand, is a very nice photo with plenty to look at.

The other one looks grainy and just not as nice imo. So yes, right choice! unlike me
