I don't normally moan about how I should have entered the OTHER photo, but this time I think I made the wrong choice?
entered this :
instead of this:

I think I'd have to agree, the second image is a lot more powerful and I would probably have marked it higher. I've made this mistake more than once though, so you're not alone. |

I kinda like the top one more...
There is something a touch muddier with the bottom one. Certain aspects excel, but I think a lot of the DPC voters would have knocked other aspects. I imagine they'd have done very similarly. I think the bottom has both greater strengths and greater weaknesses than the top.
Hope that made sense? |

Yes it does, I felt the same. That's why I couldn't decide so that makes me feel better! Thanks |

I've found that "clarity" is one of the most important scoring aspects.
I've seen that my perfect clarity, strong focus with minimal blurring but boring/common photo entries score decent. Much better than my ultra-creative ones that are imperfect photographs but great endeavors.
So in my opinion...you submitted the right one for voting. But it was definitely good to share the outtake.

I prefer your outtake, but I really needed to see both side by side.
On their own, I think they would have received very similar scores. |

I prefer your outtake as well...
my problem with the original was the star filter... WAY too much, would have been better without it IMO. |

I agree clarity is important for high scores but so is 'wow' factor, and the outtake has more imo. Anyway, thanks for the replies everybody, this has been useful!
Edit: I'm way too slow. just like to say that I didn't use a star filter, the small aperture (8) caused the star effect but I agree it's not the best ;) I wanted a long exposure so it had to be f8... Need a ND filter
