So ... not sure if people have talked about this. I can't find anything but I've been really busy at work getting out a new website.
Is the general thought for 'Flora' that people are going to be
a) looking for plants not flowers
b) looking for flowers not plants
c) equally excited about both flowers and plants
d) accepting of shots that have beautiful flora enhancing say a building or a portrait.
thoughts? :)

I think you know already that the most cliche flower shot with interesting primary colors are going to do well :-) Hey, findsomething with Red Green and Blue....

For me, C & D...
But what I've seen in other threads is that several folks have already said they plan to use the narrowest interpretation possible. I think that any shot that is not of a plant native to it's surroundings, and untouched by human hands will suffer the wrath of the NMVs this week.

There is always the option to do something "out of the ordinary" with a flora shot! Let the imagination run wild...colorful, yet different! And if you get alot of 1's...just remember you are the artist!

I think I'll be looking for some hint of environment - my highest votes will go to more than just great flower shots: they'll need another element.

Personally, I would prefer to see Flora shots to be more along the lines...like you'd see in a Biology book. Exemplify the best, most interesting, most identifing part of the plant. If the plant's best part is it's flower, so be it (but you'll have a lot of company!). A field of tulips or a close up of moss would both have similar appeal to me. (All other things equal) True, I will be a bit disappointed with shots that take the nature out of the shot (studio, etc.), but I expect quite a few of them, too. On the other hand, a ratty, nasty background against a beautiful flower will probably not do as well as the same flower against a stream or other attractive backgrounds. It's a package deal. All the elements need to be there, a good photo, plus a natural, pleasant setting. How's that? |

I was thinking of going with moss. It seems a lot more natural than flower shots, and different. I'm sure we're going to get a lot of beautiful flowers. I will definetely vote studio shots lower, since flowers you buy at the store and put in perfect lighting are not in any way flora, athough you do buy them at the florist. I'm going to try to give the best pictures the best scores. |

Jason,
Thanks for bringing u that critical distinction. Do people think that 'flora' is more an environment topic, or is studio good too?

From what I got out of it. flora is a nature thing. And not studio picture. I am looking for something that includes proof that it was taken outside in there natural environment. I have been looking out in the country for some cool plants and flowers. I don't think I will find any flowers so I will take a picture of a plant.
