I just installed and ran the Microsoft AntiSpyware. It did it's thing and found some stuff and then I restarted and, guess what, when I launched my internet browser my homepage had changed to Microsoft from Yahoo. That figures. Isn't this one of the things this software is supposed to prevent? It seems they are no different than anyone else. I guess it is time to make sure everything is backed up.

Since no one has mentioned this so far - once you remove spyware, stop using internet explorer and start using firefox.

Prevention is better than cure

My spyware infection came while using Firefox. It's better than IE, but it's not foolproof. :o)

I don't have a chance to read through all of the posts so far, so sorry if this doesn't fit your problem and sorry if this remedy has been mentioned before.

I recently had a HUGE infection by two very malicious forms of spyware. They will continually reinstall themselves unless you do a couple things to stop them. My first step was getting Ad-Aware Plus (although I'm sure other programs may work well, and maybe for less money) - $27. The key difference between this and the free version is that Plus includes a realtime monitor, which will block outgoing "tracking" cookies (which they've set a database up for already), and notifies you of any pending changes to your registry. Before, when I would try to uninstall these malware/spyware entries - they would be back right after the removal, like you said. Once I had the realtime ad-watch running, it would notify me of the program trying to re-add an entry into the registry and it would allow me to block it.

Also, I searched the internet for the names of these spyware/malware programs and found something from Symantec (maker of Norton products) that was specifically designed to remove one of them from my system. I wish I remembered the names of them, but I don't. I hope you can remove your infection without having to plop much/any money down.

Yep, everytime now when I restart and open up Internet Explorer it launches the MSN homepage instead of Yahoo which I keep trying to change it back to. Oh yeah, I am really glad I installed their antispyware now! Anyone know how I can stop this so it will launch the start page to what I want?

From the menu Tools - Options and it's at the top of the General tab.

I was doing that already and it kept changing back to MSN.com everytime I rebooted. I think it is fixed now, I deleted all cookies and temp files. It just disgusts me that a company that is supposed to be helping to prevent this kind of stuff does this themselves.

I may be mistaken, but during the install it does ask if you want MSN to be your homepage. Not sure though. I believe that most of Microsoft's free software asks if you want MSN to be the homepage, if you want to use the MSN toolbar and MSN Search. It does seem like they are contributing to the problem, but if the software is free, I guess it's there way of free advertising. Ultimately, nothing is REALLY free.

I would try a few different web browsers, and see what fits your needs. You may want to try, Opera, Mozilla, Firefox, Netcaptor or Netscape. They all have their faults, but if IE is giving you that many problems, it's worth it to try. I personally use Firefox and I haven't had any issues.

First off, I have an apology to all, as I jumped the gun, with only limited information. I thought my neighbor kept saying he had problems with AdAware, but was Adware. BIG difference.

AdAware is still recommended by Microsoft, and though I liked Microsoft's new Anti-Spyware program, I thought it was funny to read this:

this is an old thread but F.Y.I.

1.0.6 in case you need to update/
hey it's free.
