Thanks rex - My sister lives in a trailer park in Michigan. That is what she can afford. Better to own something than to throw away her money on rent. By the way, it's a nice community...

I can't believe people would make assumptions about trailer parks that is rude and uncalled for and I think SC should delete those posts. This is not what this site is about. I don't live in a trailer but I do find it rude and uncalled for that people would say something like that to someone. No I am not kidding and am very pissed about it. Deal with it. People shouldn't have to read crap like that.

What I find weird is that you make a stand about something and show some integrity and people are giving you a hard time about it. Seems some folk would take any sort of crap if they get some money for it - talk about selling out.

I agree, you should always stand up for what you believe...but I take crap every day just for money. If I wasn't willing to do that, I'm not sure I'd have a job.

Not a prob. I don't have a problem with someone saying you shouldn't take their dog or drink a beer at one of their shows. But to assume he lives in a trailer is outright rude.

Very much agreed, I have to take the crap in my day job, I'll be damned if I going to take if in my photography. If and when photography becomes my main source of income then I'd rather live on bread and cheese with my integrity intact, rather than selling out, resulting in me coming full circle and feeling about my photography in the same way I feel my current job.

Where's Jerry Springer when you need him??????

Good thing there are only virtual ribbons on this site and not virtual chairs.

I don't know the details of the situation, but sometimes taking your ball and going home isn't the best way to take a stand. I have much more respect when people finish the game, playing by the rules but make it clear that in the future they don't want to play that game anymore.

There's also something to be said for picking your battles. I think that wisdom requires knowing how to use others as much as they use you. Could you have been a greater revolutionary by sticking around and effecting some change in people?

I don't know. Like I said, I don't know the details...

Hey Nathan, you live in Wisconsin, home of the cheeseheads and U of Wisconsin (one of the largest party schools in the nation, great holloween party. Definately recommend going some time). Drinking is lightyears ahead of the rest of the country, so drinking while working is more exceptable, it is here, but not in the professional manner as setting up for a gallery. We do take cases of beer into the darkroom, hope to someday get pony keg in next to the print dryer.

But would you walk away from potentially several thousand dollar job, because a college student with a badge tells you to put your beer and dog in the truck.

Having attended the University of Wisconsin, I can say that drinking or even having beer anywhere on campus, other then in the bars that are on campus, was not allowed and documented in the campus rules. Also, dogs were never allowed in the buildings unless they were assistance dogs. I just figured these were common college campus rules?

nabisco - what led the college to using your prints for promotional purposes? Without your knowledge/permission you say. That is wrong.

I could see a campus cop showing up. For him to arrive with real cops it is either a concidence or someone called them (campus and he called for backup). if the dean dude that was with you had any autohority, he'd have overruled the campus cop and you'd have stayed. Or at least the head campus cop would have been involved.

So you drank with the President? I have drank with bosses in the past...and in certain situations that is OK, but not in every situation.

yeah it sucks they kept changing the date of the set-up. What kind of show is it? If they have promo material and the Guv'ner is coming, then I'd think they have some pretty definite dates for this event, and the last minute postponements seem a bit odd.

As to taking the dog everywhere...don't come North. I sold real estate for a while, and one client decided to bring her little dog one day - in my car, into stranger's houses. How can one be so presumptious? You wouldn't smoke these days without asking permission, and I know of a lot more folks allergic or fearful of dogs than second hand smoke. The beaver was in a cage...was the dog on a leash? I don't of anywhere anymore without a leash law.

Good luck on getting your money for your prints they used. Congrats on standing up for your 'principles', but there are lots of hungry people with principles.

As for my desparaging remark about trailer parks...come to PA and visit our wonderful trailer parks - country ghettos we call them. Tenements is what most of them are. When the poor whites fled the inner cities this is where they went. Better than wasting money on rent, yes, but barely.

We always have the option to walk away from anything we wish to. We will be called primadonnas for doing so in situations like this, but namecalling never bothered anyone. We also don't mind if our reputation of 'reliability' is damaged in any way either. We would rather let the world know that we don't take crap from anyone.

In half of London's galleries, the dog, beer and beaver would be the art themselves, as part of an installation.

Not enough focus has been paid to the beaver: how does one end up with a baby beaver? Or is this a common-day occurrence in the US, so much so that no-one has really commented on it?

As for those who thought that drinking with students who might be underage was a bad idea - did you go to university? My biggest criticism is that there is no way a six pack would be enough. I have yet to see an art show hung without at least a half dozen people sitting around at the end of it with food and a beer each, admiring the work. I have never seen one in which a baby beaver participated - but I feel that my life is poorer for not having seen (or at least heard about second-hand) such a gathering. If it does happen next time, please keep me updated.

Had he been an asian restauranteur, perhaps he could have justifed the dog and beaver as his 'lunch'. Perhaps you think they only eat cats?

legalbeagle - it's common knowledge on this side of the pond you can't leave a baby beaver home alone! ;)

I was taught that the ability to "take crap" every once in a while (again, pick your battles) was a virtue. I think it displays humility and grace and I would love to be known as one who can occasionally 'turn the other cheek'.

I'm not speaking of this situation specifically as I don't know the details...just responding to your comment.

I like my trailer. I like my neighbor's trailers. I have lived most of my life in trailers. Hey! Maybe that's why my pictures suck so bad!

My trailer (1800 sguare feet)is located on a 2.5 acre parcel in the high desert (6700 ft altitude) of New Mexico. It is a very pleasant place to have a very pleasant home.

booze, fido & art...I gotta get down South!!!

Oh man, that is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen on this site.

No toronados there?

The biggest problems with trailers around here are the old run down trailer parks with the poorest folks living there have given trailers a bad rep. So you can buy really nice 2100 SF units for $50,000 or so, but good luck on getting your money out of them in 5 years. The parks are full of older singlewides with lovely add on porches and sheds that sell for $5-10 grand.

Nsbca;

Here's Karma the WonderDog. She's a rescued shelter animal, so we don't know what's in her gene pool except that there's clearly Shepherd in her (ears and face) and she has a herdin instinct that's almost ludicrous, it's so extreme. When we go to the community leash-free field to run her, she spends all her time trying to herd the other dogs. A pointless endeavor if I ever seen one :-)

Ya I was wondering the same thing... What happened to your nice camera?

I also didnt understand any of the comments on trailer parks. around here most the hicks own houses, rundown houses, but houses none the less. I have seen some very nice trailers, often times much nicer than houses, and more room than most studio apartments in NY. I have even seen a two story trailer.

The cloudthere made a good analogy with kids taking their ball home. Makes a good point, in a much less vendictive manner than I tend to make, but still good none the less. I wish more people would look at this in a more comical fashion, leagelbeagle is...

Also what does my age have to do with my ability to discuss on this thread. Aren't I, the young ambitious college student, supposed to be fighting "the man," and arent you older people supposed to calm me down. I think it was leagelbeagle who said it best(dont quite remember for sure and I dont want to go looking through the copyright thread again). "We grow up as liberals, but wisdom and sense turns us into conservatives as we get older." (or something to that effect). How come I have the sense and nabiscos screaming "Stick it to the man!"

Getting back to the objectionable scene. I have done a quick mock up, so that we can see the problem. Not too sure of the scale of a baby beaver (not so common here in the UK) and no reference point in the photo I found, but I think that we can clearly see why the beaver had to go. Obviously - it would have gnawed its way through the marble floor (they do have strong teeth, right?).

great shot, I especially love the miller highlife can in the back. You need old style or Pabst Blue ribbon in there too

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes, I can't for the life of me remember who said it but it has stuck with me for 40-odd years:

A man becomes a conservative when he has something to conserve.

I can see how the scene could quickly have gotten out of control.
