Last update tonight. I think my score's creeping up in the right direction but I'm not crossing my fingers.

It's my first challenge and unfortunately I was pretty busy during the challenge period, so I never came up with anything I truly thought was good. As a result, my submission is boring. I will be really impressed if I finish with a rating over 5.0.

Sadly this is not my first challenge and my submission is worse than boring!!! I predict a very low score. Can I request a DQ for having an orrible entry (j/k I know I can't but wish I could)

Sue, you actually are allowed to self-DQ a submission, but only once in a blue moon. I've done it once.

MsDoubleTrouble, I don't know if this is going to help you out or not, but here is my take on voting on challenges such as this...You are very right...there are some very nice photos, that don't seem to be minimal. In my mind, the first criteria for voting on any challenge, is..."Did the photographer meet the challenge definations?" I don't care how good the image is, it must meet the definiation to get a good score, otherwise, anyone could throw any ol' "Nice photograph" into any challenge and be graded well. Sometimes I stretch the defination, if it looks like someone has a different idea than mine. I don't want to cast a low vote, because my idea of the challenge was different than someone elses. However when it says, "your subject is the strong point of the image, but only occupying a very small portion of the image space", then YOUR SUBJECT better be the main subject, and not just a small piece of the image. And my interpertation of "small portion" is at the most, a quarter of the image or less, preferrable less. That's my two cents, and that is a pretty small protion. Good luck everyone!

I'm averaging 5.2 right now. meh.

I must say, there are sooo many great entries! Wow! Seeing so many fabulous shots gives me inspiration to achieve something like that someday. I'm really enjoying voting in this challenge!

I am voting like this... it's not about big or small, and it's not about negative space (necessarily)... it's about a subject that may not be the entire frame, but evokes such a response that I want to know more about it...why it's there, what is the rest of the picture, does it stir something inside me to feel any particular emotion...does the "minimal" portion (or all) of the subject make me think, feel, and/or react? Does it create a mood for me? Just because something takes up half the frame and not 5-10% is no reason for me to mark it down if the shot does any or all of the above I've described. Starkness, sparseness, and the like CAN create lonely, sad, and desolate (and a zillion other emotions as well), but just because something small is in the composition and the rest of the negative space is a blank wall or blue sky or something doesn't mean that it DOES evoke an emotional response from me. I'm certainly going to vote based on emotion than technical prowess this time around. Actually, I have been the past few challenges.

Man, I need coffee. What is my deal with this philosophical rambling this morning? LOL ;o)

I was hoping for more voters to use such criteria for my entry. The subject IS smaller than the norm, but not as tiny as it probably should be. The photo overall, though, is shot in what I consider to be the minimalist style: few elements, few primary colors, simple composition. And while I had hoped for something above 5.5 I can say I'm not surprised that I'm hovering just above a five. I guess this is one of those times that I entered something that I really like, and am happy to take the hit. Sorry if I sound whiney, I don't really mean to complain.

My lone comment about says it all: "That's a pretty shot, but not minimalistic for me".

I tried to "study up" on minimalism before entering this challenge. I studied the works (paintings mostly) in the minimalism style. They are not necessarily small. It might be stark, geometric, little color or very few primary colors, one major idea on a bare background, etc. I think I get the idea, which should help me with the voting process.

I agree with this. There are a lot of images in this challenge that meet the challenge guidelines which are just plain "Boring". But I still think it is important that the photographer must stay within the guidelines to get a good score. There are a handful of shots in this challenge that meet the guidelines and "stir something inside me". Unfortunately, there are only a few (less than 20 in 493 [wow, almost as many as 'Abandoned Buildings']), and my overall scoring average has gone down in this challenge.

That is pretty much my take too, unfortunatly my submission I'm afraid failed to meet that...I rushed and did not focus on my main subject, my DOF was off so I'm sure it will be viewed different than what I imagined. average score is 4.? Just as I thought...dang it for rushing.

My entry is based on the hope that people scoring have clicked on the link "Minimalism" and read what the challenge actually is.

How am I scoring?

I'm scoring based on how hungry the photo makes me feel.

Well the voting has barely started and I know I'm doomed...I just glanced at the submissions and I will be lucky if I get past my 4.1 score and even luckier if I make the top 150. :( There are some good images there that I feel really meet the challenge.

I have the highest score in any of my challenges so far.

I know 5.7 is not high but if it stays like this I will be a happy teddy bear. I have read how people are voting and I think that I have tryed to meet this in the challenge. I also will be voting later with this in mind. Good luck everyone.

ok woke up a while ago and decided to vote on the photos before i read any posts about it....minimalism to me does not mean take a picture of your subject from as far away as possible.....also as stated before in this thread make me have to think as to what is the subject in the shot...the subject should be clear and stand out on a backround that is pretty consistant in its look so as not to distract....this is how i voted...."so it is written so it shall be done".....yuel brenna the 10 commandments
