Well, it's the eyes that are important for me, I've never been a huge fan of the "Head and Torso" method of portraiture.. but to each their own. I just like experimenting :)
I love the expression on your nephew. lol.

well, of course, the eyes are #1,#2 and #3 in a portrait, mess up they focus on the eyes and the odds are that the portrait is useless. I'm, of course, aware of the exceptions, but those are general guidelines.
What I meant to say with my comment on the chin, is that the crop is so close to the chin that it's a bit bothersome. I think I'd be better crop more or show more, if you get my meaning. The curve of the chin touches the border of the photo and automaticly attracts my attention away from the expression and eyes which are it's strong features.
keep on experimenting, if you don't try out new things you don't know if they work. It's only bitspace anyway.
Yeah, I caught a nice expression on my nephew, he was in a playful mode that day. Unfortunately the light is a bit too hard and shadows too harsh, and fixing that is too much PS work for me.

I've got a few if someone cares to comment.
Tryiing some portraits. Don't know very well where to put the subject though. I find myself sometimes a bit lost. Any thoughts or rules to follow?

This one is one of my favs, taken over the past Christmas holiday with my then new-to-me Zeiss 75mm Boitar. I really liked the narrow DoF.

Glen... I forgot to comment that your shot is adorable! I love the expression you captured. He really shows a sense of wonder in his eyes! Thanks for starting this thread; I love to see people candids like these! :o)

Nice candid, Glen. Here are a couple of my kids that I had taken, using the same technique.
The one of my son, is one of my favorites I've taken of him.

Hehe.. looks like I should take my own advice from my Critique Club comment about the chin ;) Of course, *NOW* I think I really like it that way.
Go figure :)

Some good ones posted. I'm a fan, too. I prefer shooting outdoors though! Here are two of my recent ones.

What's wrong with my lens(es)? I mean, I know I don't have L glass like you, but are they all so unsharp that you have to make a comment like that? I'm using a 50mm 1.8 and a 75-300 IS USM, and they both seem to do OK for me as well as the hundreds of other DPC users who use them and post similar pictures.

Most of those shots she posted are wonderfully sharp, especially where they need to be. The B&W has a very classic grainy feel to it that only adds to it, and the couple that are a little OOF seem that way because of movement.. and we all go through that while learning.
Instead of just making blanket statements, try actually *really* helping people by offering constructive criticism. "If you can't see it, I can't help you", is by far one of the most insulting things I've ever read on this website.

I didn't insult any person or style here,my comment was that THE LENS used on the portraits was not sharp!

Focus is not quite right, just recently got my Canon 50mm f/1.8II lens and have been experimenting with it.
