Yes, it was. |
Just curious, was it because of the content, or was it do to a break in the editing rules? I was looking forward to seeing who took it and reading the hundreds of comments I'm sure it received lol. |
Ditto, I also would like to know why it was DQ'ed.
Can't be for the content or not meeting the challenge.
Yes I commented (Nice comment) and scored it lower, because I did not see how it met the challenge, but I didn't find it realy disturbing.

Well...I didn't score very high with my letter..
Place: 93 out of 265
Avg (all users): 5.432
but I did accomplish what I hoped for....at least meeting a 5.0 and coming in under the top 100...so I am pleased...and it was picked as a favorite by one user...so that is like the cherry on top...thanks to all who voted and commented...

I didn't vote on your particular photo in the challenge, but I'll offer you my opinion since you asked. ;o)
I thought it was a nude from the thumbnail...which is fine (I'm no prude and you will find that I have several artistic nude faves), and I thought, "Wow, what a creative take on the challenge!" But upon opening the image, I was rather let down. I first read the title, to see if it gave me insight into the photo, which it did...but the typo kind of glared out at me (I'm a teacher and school counselor, so it's hard to leave the red pen at work), which didn't help. I studied the image for a few moments, realizing it was a splitting hair, and decided that:
1. It's a rather mundane object that most anyone can find either on their own head or the head of a SO/family member/neighbor/whoever.
2. There is little detail visible, and the splitting end on the right side makes it appear to be out of focus.
3. The colors on the hair shaft itself are a bit distracting (darker and lighter in places).
4. The hair kind of reminds me of a bug's antennae... which it would be OK if it were and there were a bug in the shot, but it's not, so one was left to wonder if that really was a hair or some poor insect is now wandering through life sans antennae.
In your favor, the composition is good and the light is very even, which helps the shot some. It does meet the challenge, albeit in a pretty easy and mundane way. So overall, during the voting, I would have given it a 4 or a 5 (like my opinion means anything though).
I tend to rate images based on less technically-perfect aspects and more along the lines of visual interest/appeal/emotive quality. Would I hang Image XYZ on my wall? On anyone's wall? Could I see that still hanging somewhere in 100 years and it saying something to those people? When I look at your image, I can't answer those questions with yes. It's ok, because I know that 99% of my own images would be a big fat no to most people. But that's the goal I aspire to reach in my own photography and it's how I look at other people's work as well.
So Eren, don't get discouraged, and try not to get frustrated with those who are just trying to give you their opinions. You asked us for our thoughts, so don't be alarmed when people here give it to you straight up. Take care! :o)

Thank you Lauriel. This has been very helpful. I totally agree what you said on your critique. This is similar to the other serious critiques I got. And I do see those points very well. You have pointed out some extra points that would make use of. I'm definately not discouraged when people don't like my photos. Otherwise I wouldn't put them here to be voted. When I took this shot I wasn't totally happy with the result myself because it was just a shot that met the rules of the challenge and not more. But I was only surprised that it was rated so low. So I thought maybe people didn't understand it was an abstract/macro shot of a hair string. Because the critiques during the voting were kind of weird. Just wanted to hear what the actual problem was so that I can make up my mind for the upcoming challenges. |

When I looked at it my first thought was that there really wasn't much to it at all, very minimalistic, looked like a line drawing more than a photograph. When I realized it was a hair I thought it was trying to be suggestive of a woman's crotch in a way that would be deniable, and that turned me off further. Don't get hung up about it though, just try to learn something about how the voters react to things.

thanks, well i'm not hung on anything. i was trying to figure out what went wrong. and what i learned out of this is that abstract photography is not voters favourite. i liked its simplicity what others didn't. so i learned that i shouldn't post photos that have too much abstract quality or that are just too concentrated on the challenge. once again i'm not hung up on this photo. i didn't think it was that good myself. i only didn't think it was a fair result. especially when a guy whose macro submissions are not true macros comes up and says its not close enough. but thanks to all who took their times to write some words. i think it is also good to argue about photography. its not just about congratulations and bravos. sometimes we need to argue and defend and loose on our photos. |

Well, I was really happy with the results of my accidential letter photo. Thanks for all the great scores and comments on my entry. I am very happy with how the photo turned out and even happier with how well it was received here.
We were racing to get to another spot to get photos as the sun set when I saw this opportunity. We pulled off the road and I took 5 different variations of the shot, then jumped back in the truck. I didnât even know what the challenge was when I took this (I probably would have composed it differently if I took it for the challenge). I saw what the challenge was when i got home and remembered this shot, then submitted it at the last minute. The title was actually a typo because I was rushing, it was suppose to be âV is for viewâ but I missed the for in my haste.

You asked for opinion and came off strong while asking for it. Especially when asking another person how they NOT find it interesting? Similar to asking someone how they cannot like beer/pizza or any other personal opinion. So I responded with critique on why I didn't like it, with I presumed the same strength back in the message you gave off.
So then I become the arrogant one. Oh well, you should've stated you wanted selective criticism if you're not willing to accept the same response and boldness you put out. I will refrain from critiquing you in the future to avoid this. =P |

Your submission reminded me of this.... :)
P.S. I liked your shot, but it would have been better as a more graphic black and white image.

I guess not...? I was also wondering. Would be helpful to know whether it was content DQ'd or not before I go out and invest in 3 gallons of fake blood for the, um... Minimalism challenge. Yeah that's it. ;-) |

Please don't take my comments wrong - they are meant to be constructive, albeit sarcastic. First off, it doesn't much matter what you think in terms of your score. If it did, you'd have, let's see... 3 blue ribbons! ;-)
Originally posted by Eren: I'm a bit pissed off with the very low result i got. there were 432 viewers and only 279 voters? |
If you get "pissed off" about your DPC scores, you should quit and find another hobby.
Originally posted by Eren: yes i made a mistake while i was typing breaking but it was still obvious i think what the photo was referring to. |
That kind of mistake can cost you (not that it necessarily was the case), but I remember seeing that, and since "braking" is actually a word with another meaning, I thought there might be some other abstract meaning to it that I was not seeing. Because of that, I spent more time on it than I needed to and became frustrated because I didn't get it. Then I did assume you just misspelled it. Not sure why people are careless when typing in the title - also, I believe you can change it right up until the submission deadline. No excuse for it in my book - like it or not, it is part of the presentation.
Originally posted by Eren: i thought it was also technically a good shot. i chose a rather empty background(just the backlight) because it is a tiny piece of hair and it wouldn't make any sense with any kind of background so i wanted to keep it simple. i'm also quite upset with the comments i got so i'd appreciate some proper comment on the photo. why you think it stuck so low? anybody else unhappy with their result?? |
Generally I would agree with most, that it is just boring. If you like it's minimalistic appearance - reshoot it and enter it in the current challenge - it will probably do better. ;-)
Just have fun.
