Good work though.. the object isn't really to create great photos as much as creating simple snapshots of people you have asked. Don't forget to get their names :)

Skip,

What an incredible series. At first I could not stop laughing at all of the models holding the releases, but I quickly saw a lot more than that - great photography, and an enormous amount of openness and candor in obtaining that kind of participation.

Fantastic job.

I actually liked all the model release pictures =) Bonus points for that. =)

Those are really great, Skiprow.
I wonder if I'll have time to do something similar here in Japan, all in Japanese...

Skip these are terrific photos, and you make it look so easy! I am inspired to try now, but it will take me a lot longer to complete the challenge.

thanks, ALL, but especially john, for the killer challenge!

if you are not sure, but are considering doing this, here are some more ideas. if you keep it simple, you won't have to psyche yourself up to do it, and you won't psyche yourself out.

1) this took me roughly 3 hours to shoot. i knew where i was going to go, though, before i left home.

2) i shot all of these with the 50mm f/1.8 lens and existing light (with the exception of nelson's (the ups delivery man) model release, where i used the on-board flash). in a couple shots, i used my 6.5" table-top tripod. point is: i was travelling very light.

3) if anyone wants the ms-word file i used to make the signs and slips, pm me.

4) i approached everyone this way: "can you help me? i am working on a photo safari, and this is what i need to do." my camera may have been on my shoulder, but it was NOT in my hands--the point being that i didn't want anyone to feel i was coming after them with a camera.

5) i consider these types of images to be posed candids. while i wasn't really trying to produce 'great art', i did feel an obligation to give each of these strangers my best. as they were giving me their time, patience, and trust, i felt i should give them something more than just a snapshot. so i did take a moment to look around for lighting and perspectives.

as luck would have it

1) keith (adult on a bike) was a trip to catch. i know this plaza in the heart of downtown where the bike couriers usually hang out. when i drove by, he was the only one there. after going around the block a few times, i finally found a parking spot. when i got up to the plaza, he was racing off. so i decided to head to another spot. and what happened? i happened to pass keith 5 minutes later!

2) i got really lucky at the 3rd St Diner. not only were 3 different people there, james (the cook) got solidly behind the project.

3) i spent a bit of time riding around looking for someone walking a dog, and when i finally found someone, he was too busy talking on his cellphone for me to interrupt him. it would have made a great picture, but it wouldn't have fit this challenge.

4) i had hoped to find a street performer for musician, but, as the weather wasn't good for that, i decided to try my luck at a music shop. here again, i scored. when i walked in the door at GuitarWorks, not only did i find a couple musicians, but ryan had his dog jessie with him!

post-processing

all images were fairly straight-forward. only 3 of them required significant work:

1) i added a motion blur to keith (the bike rider)

2) as tania #2 was intended to be a bit abstract, i duplicated and multiplied the base layer

3) luke (the ticket seller). ay-yi-friggen-yi, the glare on the window was a monster to edit around.

so, what's next? i'm going to make prints and take them back to my subjects. well, that, as well as find a referee at a game where they sell ice cream at the concession stand ;-)

if you're on the fence, go for it! i promise you, the first one is the hardest, but after that, it gets easier and easier and easier.

thanks again, good luck, everyone!

Skiprow,

You're an inspiration! It was great going through your photos, it was like taking a virtual tour of the people of Richmond. The text blurbs were really nice too. Come to think of it, I think there must be some sort of "Board of Tourism" for Richmond. I think your photo series would be a great brochure, along with the blurbs, they really put a human face to the place.

Many kudos to you, each of your photos are very interesting to look at and have fitting moods. Very admirable.

You definitely get the Golden Slippy AND Two Thumbs Up for this.

Oh yes, big kudos also to jmsetzler for coming up with this challenge!

I gotta get crackin' on mine. I have 3 out of the 15 photos so far...

Is anyone besides skip working on this project?
04/13/2005 09:22:57 PM · #38
I'm seriously considering it... I am still kind of shy (yeah, me... shy) about asking strangers to pose, but I think it would be a good exercise for me. I'll let you know when I start. :o)

Likely not, but it wouldn't be that improbable either.

I'd like to give it a shot, but I'm pretty strapped for spare time, so it may take me forever, but then it can become just a personal project, so I don't feel deadlined. Skiprow made it look like a lot of fun.

It would be a great exercise for me, but I haven't the time right now.

Kudos to John for the idea and Skip for jumping in and setting such an excellent example (and great shots too).

I'm out. Dry county - no bars. Nearest movie cinema 100 miles. No bike trails so you rarely see adults on bikes. The rest should be easy.

This is something I could certainly benefit from - I imagine I would have a tough time approaching strangers, though I've never tried.

Skiprow - GREAT STUFF

Skiprow - Great shots. I especially like Nate and Charlie. Is that an old Pentax Curtis is shooting with?

This is the first time I looked at this thread and I'm impressed!

Nice work, skiprow!

I know the 'prize' was for the first one to finish but I won't even be able to start until next week...that being said, if I come back and this thread is still kickin' I'll definitely join in the fun!

It's going to take me a while, but I'm going to try to finish regardless, it is fun to do!

OK, decided I didn't like my shot for #11, I'll get a better one another time.

I put their pics holding their name-sheets in the description, just like that fancy-pants skiprow did. ;-)

Here's my shot for #7:

And for #14:
