I want to retain anonymity here - and let people enjoy the challenge too - but my leopard skinned, lesser spotted, Yaiwanese, dragon-eyed belching puppy is currently nestling comfortably as follows:
Votes: 63
Score: 8.347
Comments: 73

Edit: just gone up to 8.762

The challenge stated to submit a portrait of your pet. Why does every hair have to be so sharp to define it from the one next to it? There are soft focus portraits. I am finding that entries have to be absolutely sharp, extreme dof, true color, and if you vary from any of these you will end up with a low score. I know some challenges require technical excellence and agree with that requirement. Other challenges should allow some variance and voters should vote accordingly. |

Actually, I'd like to see an example of a shot that did well only because there was nudity in it. I'm not saying there is or isn't one, but I am saying it's not a trend.

The worst part is that most of the time I don't receive many comments. I receive 3-4 comments per challange. Some of them are just "Good", "Nice shot". I always select for in-depth critique, but I never received one.

I really like my photo, perhaps an opinion I share alone but I'd much rather see what people are thinking about it up front than to take a pounding thats doing me no good (only 1 comment). |

Same here, I thought this would be my highest yet, I love the shot, but went from an early 7.5 to a 5.1 with 1 comment which was good. If you don't like it I just want to know why. I mean if it's just a horrible shot I could understand, but I know this is a decent shot and there must be just one thing holding people back from a better scoring which may vary from voter to voter but either way. . .let me know. . .what is it?
well, maybe when i figure these things out for myself without someone telling I'll be where i want to be with my photography. . . |

I know how you feel, I am just stumped with this one...I was sure this was going to be my highest score yet but it's almost turning into my lowest, 3 comments 2 of which are favorable and 1 offers some much appreciated critisism to help me understand the voting a little better. |

pawdrix, I know what you mean. I'm at 5.3 and I'm not happy either. But our scores are not a "pounding" around here.
In my mind, a 5 average is totally unacceptable and makes me want to put my camera away for good! I get real gunshy about submitting. Then I go hang out for awhile with local people that praise my photography and I get all pumped up and confident again. Vicious cycle.
At least you have one comment!

Commenting is hard sometimes. I try but DPC seems to be slow at the moment so getting through the voting itself, is task enough.
In this particular case however, I'd really like to know which end is up. The response to my entry outside of DPC has been astounding and I thought this would be ripe to the DPC palette as well.
...inquiring minds want to know. |

Lowest score for a while. I stepped out side the box again. If the voters read the title, it ties right in. I guess I took the part of the challenge discription (Have fun) to heart. I should had just entered a basic plain studio portrait........na I like the theme........ace

I'm anticipating a huge jump before the end of voting, which will put me in a commanding lead for the Blue Ribbon!!! |

I am really confused about the voting... aren't scores of 1-3 reserved for pictures that are technically challenged (bad focus, very under/over exposed, no composition, etc) or does not fit the challenge??? I seem to be only getting scores of two extremes... either 1-3 or 7-10. All of my comments are very positive... I just cannot figure out why I would be receiving the low scores? I wish people who gave those out commented on them. This is very confusing. |

My guess is that people are voting in a very personal way(subconciously) because it's not just an object they've photographed but something they love. Nobody wants their Skittles, Bingo or Darla to place 189th.
I'm having a hard time voting low knowing that it's a bit more personal on an sub level and I don't want to metphorically step on someones pet. |

I guess for me "average" quality photos get at least a 5. Good lighting, good composition, good overall quality. Then those photos that stand out from average get the higher scores. For me, most people in this contest have a least a 5. |
