Greetings folks... here's the next installment in the ongoing critiques here :) Enjoy...

I like the composition, but I do not like the tonal range. It seems a little dark, and a little flat.

Is this a negative scan? The DOF is very limited, which I like, but it may be cool to vary it a little and see out it looks.

I would also like to see one with a little more of the lower part of the pump.

Interesting project.

Didn't say I would like it, just would like to see how it would affect the image.

I wish for the edges in the near object sharper and the stainless steel/chrome to be more bright. ( shiner x schiney x shinier oh, you know what I mean)

The DOF is certainly what make this shot. Looking at the picture for its subject matter, I don't like the fact that the base of the image isn't grounded well. Looking at it from what I believe it is, an abstract study of shapes and focus, I think it's brilliant. It looks like something that would sit on a diner wall. Nice job, John.

Its not mine... i like the angle.. if it were any lower to get the base of the first dispenser, you would lose the vanishing patterns to the back...

I think there would be a way to do it, perhaps with a wider angle lens. Also, rotating the camera 90 degrees.

So, if this is not yours, why did you show us this John?

i like this. is has a very industrial feel as though it belongs on the wall of a cool downtown restaurant/bar....maybe as a part of a series by the author. i like the DOF-- with the first piece so shiny and in focus it gives a wonderful sense of infinity.
two thumbs up, john!

It's just for the purpose of critique... some of what I post here is mine and some isn't...

Maybe you could title these threads "Critique Forum" or "Current Critique" or even "Criticism 101" to make it clearer that this is a group effort at improving criticism skills and having a chance to see some interesting photos outside of the challenge. "Critique Request" makes it seem more personal on your part...

Since the photos are typically unrelated to the current or past challenge, posting it later in the week (Wed or Thu) after most people have voted would seem reasonable too...

The shallow DoF makes this for me. I really like that only the
first dispenser is sharp, and the rest are just a shadow of the
repetition of the pattern and form.

Lots of interesting converging lines. The pattern and blur almost
make me feel like it is moving into/ out of the image and I'm just
seeing afterimages.

Fun at first, but I don't know how much long term interest it would
have - would you keep coming back to this one ?

I like the concept of the infinity but the subject doesn't thrill me. Black and white works well here (as it usually does for photos that depend on repeating patterns, abstract or other form type photos).

I like the reflective surface of the pump and even the shape..just doesn't get me though.......

This is definitely one of those situations where the technical attributes of the photo far outweigh the subject interest to me.

I think the repeating pattern is what caught my eye on this photo. I really liked it. I did NOT find myself looking for the base of the first dispenser.... I think I primarily found myself lost in the nice depth of field... :)

My suggestions were just what I would like to see if this were a work in progress. I would like to see this subject from a few different prespectives just to see if it would make is stronger.

As a finished work I find it unappealing. I think the subject is worth further study though.

The story behind this is a good one... I think the owner will come forward shortly :)

Thanks John.

This is my photo. I enrolled in a local community college to take a photography class and this picture is a scan from the first roll I processed and printed on my own. I took this picture with a Nikon N80 using a 50mm Nikkor lens on Kodak Tri-X 400. OK, enough of the technical stuff... :)

It was my second visit to Tijuana flats and this time I had brought my camera. When I first saw the 12 hot sauce dispensers in line I just knew I had to take a photo of it. I politely asked for a manager and told him I was a photography student and that I'd like to take a picture of the hot sauces. He said with a smile, "no problem, have fun". I knew I wanted a shallow depth of field so I set my lens to f1.8. Since it wasn't very bright in the resaurant I had to set my lens to 1/30. The lens was about 18" away from the dispenser with my elbows on the back of a chair for support. I framed it this way because I wanted the first dispenser to sort of peak into the frame and then have the full dispensers in the background. One thing that I really like about this image is that you can actually count the dispensers getting blurry and into the background.

Well that's it. Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I hope I can take another picture that you will all critique so kindly.

Did you only take the one shot? Why not work it more? I would usually blow most of a roll on good subject.

This was the first assignment for a class at school. The assignment was to take half a 36 exposure roll indoor and half outdoor with 12 subjects in total bracketed +/- 1.
