I was just looking through Sports Illustrated's new Swimsuit edition online, and the photos were done underwater by photographer Howard Schatz. They're really incredible, but this one in particular almost seems impossible to create without just the illusion of it being underwater. No bubbles or anything..and the flowers on the scarf are so perfectly placed. I was just wondering everyone's thoughts.

Here's the Photo

It is nice ,but maybe a little bit too much (at once). The bottom half would make a good Billboard.

They look too airbrushed and touched up in general for me.

I remember seeing a documentary years ago though on an underwater photo shoot that had amazing results. May have been for Pirelli.

The models were teathered by a foot (with an emergency quick release), usually, to a rock, hidden say behind corel. They had food for the fish sprinkled around them. Water was maybe 10 foot deep maybe, so nice and light, heaps of fish. The attending divers had really long octopus rigs (i.e. spare breathings mouth pieces on long tubes). They would set up the shot, then move out of shot themselves, and then at the last second quickly pull away the air hose. Snap, snap, divers back in.

It was on TV, BBC in the UK, and I would love to see it again. If I can find any photos from it I'll post a link, but it was at least 10 years ago so I doubt I can.

The model had a couple of divers in constant attendance

There was an article a few months ago in digital photo pro(I think) on this guy. He does a lot of work to get the pictures. He has a picture of the pose he wants the model to get into. Now that he's famous for these types of pictures, I guess he can hire plenty of assistants to help with the shoot. He started out by photographing a dancer he knew and then came to the attention of the media. I think he has two books published already with the water shots. I think they are extremely graceful.
