My wife's co-worker is getting married this May and she asked if I would take some engagement pictures of her and her fiance. This is really my first attempt at any type of portrait photography.

The shoot was yesterday at 2:00pm and the position of the sun was really difficult to work with! I was getting very hard shadows and the fiance insisted on wearing his cowboy hat. Anyhow, I did the best I could with what I had to work with.

I don't have any reflectors but I did use my SB-800 for a fill flash. The fill flash only seemed to work when I was pretty close to them.

I would appreciate any comments.

Thanks.

The one of him playing guitar to her in the window is just fantastic! It's one of those photos that, even if the others were garbage (which they're certainly not), it would make the whole shoot worthwhile.

Great job...they're sure to be impressed!

There are a few where the harsh sunlight is a bit much on the faces, but otherwise you've done really good work!

Find a tree making shade. Place them on the edge of the shade with the sun behind them, making sure the tree prevents glare. Meter and shoot.

Like having a large softbox.

You have some nice poses, but the contrast caused by the sun presents some problems. So does that hat.

Lighting issues aside, they will probably love all of them. My faves are the first one (WOW), the one of them dancing, and the one of both of them playing the guitar. Great, unusual, and atypical engagement photos that probably share more of their personalities than the average studio shoot. Well done! :o)

4610_2 is great, as is 4647. I think the sun really did you in in the others. I think the best thing to take from this is to insist on rescheduling if you're in this situation again, or to move indoors if you can't find suitable shade.

You certainly had some great ideas for poses, and the shots would have been terrific had it been an cloudy day. Bummer.

These will certainly be treasured by the lovely couple for many years to come. How playful! and imaginative. You did good, the sun probably couldn't resist coming out for such a happy couple.

I like these alot! The poses are wonderful, although some could use just a little tweaking. I like that they don't appear very stiff. The one of them by the tree...her looking down at him - I wish he was looking at her. I also think the sun would have been less a factor if the girl wasn't wearing that very light skirt.

On my monitor, the web shots seem very pixelated and I see some haloing. These may not be an issue with the higher res files you have for prints.

I agree with the others that the first photo is the best, but they are all fun and well done. If this is your first attempt, I can't wait to see what you come up with next! :)
