i don't know if anyone agrees, but While i think it is a great picture and has a definite mood to it, i wouldn't want this on the wall. It has a horror movie feel to it, and does look quite goth to me. Some people would love this image on their wall, but I wouldn't at all. It is a very good shot though.

I tend to agree with this assessment. From a technical or artistic perspective it is a powerful composition. Look at the responses its already engendered. Seldom do we like to think of children having a darker side and while this photos doesn't necessarily point that direction it leaves that interpretation open to the viewer much moreso than other photos of children running or playing or smiling vapidly at Elmo (and yeah, we're taking our daughter to see Sesame St so I don't mean "vapidly" as pejoratively as it may initially sound).

Now this is a valid point. While I don't think I'd originally want to hang this on my wall, I think that if I were to capture such a look I'd consider hanging it as the artist in my gallery/studio 'cause I'm guessing that this is a look that might haunt the parents (please forgive the pun) because it is replete with interpretation. The photo Kavey (et al) have selected is a lovely photo but the invitation there is to follow the child's gaze out of the frame. In this shot the focus of attention is centered solely upon the young subject. I'd probably initially want a different photo of my child but I think I might have to come back to have this one printed for me just cause it has that little quirk that invites my mind to come back and explore it even after I've looked at it in this post a few times.

Great shot and thanks for sharing.

Hey now! :) I'm not the only one with this opinion :) I love the second photo that Kavey linked to just as much, but for entirely different reasons.

As for loving me.. I'm not sure about that.. voters sure don't lately ;)

I think both pictures are beautiful and as a mother, would be proud to have them on my wall, in my wallet, on my desk at work, and on the walls/desks/mantles/pianos/whatevers of every relative I have. :o)

Who wouldnt be proud to have shots like that of their daughter? I think they are both beautiful! I, personally, like my shots to be happier feeling(If that makes sense? But they are great portraits notheless. The first thing that popped into my head when I saw it was( it should be all black and white) But I really love the timeless feel of black and white shots. Keep up the good work!

i think it's a gorgeous shot...both of them, actually, but i prefer the first one posted. i lean toward darker and more gothic looking images, though...just my personal preference.

As a Dad, I think it's neat, if I could get our 17month old to pose for more than 2 seconds I'd be trying for moody portraits of her, as she's more willing to 'model' than her Mum. :-).

Although I can see some folks wouldn't like the 'darker' take in a childs portrait. I think in balance with other photos on the wall/in the album this great work.

If this was the only picture of the child ever taken it would probably be a bit much though. Especially if it was sent to relatives, without a letter to explain, or another 'happy' photo. :-)..

Cheers, Chris H.

I love the photo, but I really wish the hair wasnt covering half of her face. It really takes a lot away. Afterall the face is the most important aspect of a portraite.

OK, I am so loving the responses on this photograph! I sent it to her mom to see what she thinks then I'll let you know.

--Parrothead...love the sepia! I had a b&w version of it but I didn't try the sepia and it is beautiful.

--Goth, vampire, horror movie...I can see that. I think it's her coloring that makes it that way, for the most part - if she had red hair and green eyes..?

Thank you everybody for sharing your time and your comments with me. This is why I LOVE DPC! Although I don't have a snowballs chance in pergatory to every ribbon again, it is where I learned nearly everything I know, including accepting opinions from every side - which I wasn't able to do previously.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

I like dark stuff in some respects but it feels kind of weird for a young child's portrait. I am also still wondering about that funny shaped dress hump?

I would be interested to see it in B/W too.

You know, the only thing I can think of was that she was dancing and rustling her dress around before I took this photograph, perhaps one of the underlayers of netting got bunched up. Or, perhaps she's a Who from Whoville :)

Dr. Seuss's the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Who's in Whoville are eggshapped people :)

OF COURSE!

I think you should try to get beauty out of a child, but the first photo is almost psycho, shows some crazyness I think, and I do not like it and would not like that picture of my child. But the second picture is absolutely beautiful and shows respect for the child.

Im a mother of three kids....I love the first shot. That is one of those looks that you cant catch in a picture all the time! I would display it proudly if I were her mother!

Um...no, but then I'm a 29 year old male. It looks to me as if she's deciding how moist and delicious your head will be. Good photo, creeps me out a little bit.

the subject is a cute little girl and the other pic you posted really shows that off much better. Two things really bug me about this first shot. First, it just looks kinda creepy, mostly the lighting, but her expression doesn't help. Second, (and this jumped right out at me) is how big her feet look in relation to the rest of her.
01/06/2005 01:01:15 PM · #49
First of all, both images are terrific technically. However, I'm going to swim against the predominant tide here & say that I much prefer the first one. I think it's the colors & lighting that give the goth feel, not the little girl's expression.

Also, the second pic looks posed & unnatural to me. Having said that, I'm sure that's exactly what some (many?) people want to end up with when they take their kids to their local Sears photo studio. Of course, they'll never get that portrait taken by a famous photographer there, either.

Just my 2cts.

LMAO

There's no doubting results. You got a "killer" shot with that first one.
