Greetings...

It's that time of year again to set some new goals and projects for the coming year. My 2004 goals were successful, but my primary one is not complete yet. I'm just a few photos away from having the initial phase of this project complete:

My Town - All the photos and writeups

2005 Goal #1:

2005 Railroad Themed Calendar – shoot 12 new railroad photos for this project

*Update*

1/4/2005 - Haven't done anything on this one yet

2005 Goal #2:

Sell 100 copies of this print in my local community

*Update*

1/4/2005 - I had 100 promotional 4x6 prints of this made and have started distributing them around the area.

2005 Goal #3:

Complete my first Photo-A-Day and carry it on through the end of 2005 for a 'complete' year. I'm currently on day 189 of my first 365 days.

*Update*

1/4/2005 - Project on track

2005 Goal #4:

Shoot a wedding as a second photographer with one of the professional wedding photographers in my town.

*Update*

1/4/2005 - Contacted Rosemary Cheek... her first wedding of 2005 so far is in May. She is contacting the bride to find out if it's ok for me to shoot as well. Still waiting on a response...

2005 Goal #5:

Shoot a free wedding for a couple who can̢۪t afford a professional photographer.

*Update*

1/4/2005 - Placed an ad for this in the local trade newspaper.

2005 Goal #6:

Series work: Add at least 25 new photos to my artists̢۪ hands series, 30 new photos to my hood ornaments series, and define one new series set containing at least 15 photos.

*Update*

1/4/2005 - I located a car show that is happening on May 7. I hope to find a few additional shows to attend in the local area.

2/1/2005 - I have defined my new project as "Signs of the Times" and it will contain at least 30 photos. More details on this one later...

2005 Goal #7:

Photograph at least one live performance at the Hickory Community Theater.

*Update*

1/4/2005 - My friend Molly Bass is writing and directing a play that will be performed in May. She has given me the green light to photograph it for her.
1/10/2005 - I will be contacting Molly again on 4/15 to get more details.

2005 Goal #8:

Complete my photo project for my church (DVD Slideshow with at least 150 photographs)

*Update*

1/4/2005 - I have planned to go back to the church for a few hours on Saturday afternoon and shoot some more photos for this series.
1/10/2005 - I did not make it back to the church this weekend. I will have to reschedule.

2005 Goal #9:

Create some photo sales with the Lifestyles editor of the Hickory Daily Record

*Update*

1/4/2005 - Photographed "Derringer" and have started a new portfolio for this project.

2005 Goal #10:

Have another local exhibit of my work.

*Update*

1/4/2005 - No new updates here yet.
1/8/2005 - I was invited to display one piece of work at the Hickory Museum of Art. There is an exhibit starting at the end of January of the work of Joel Meyerowitz and his "After 9/11" photographs. I will also be attending his presentation at the museum on January 21. This is not exactly the 'exhibit' I was looking for but it will do :)

Hey John, this is a tremendous list, there are some real interesting goals here. We should all do well to make a similar list. You are an inspiration to us all.

Have a good Christmas, and an even better new year.

I hope other people have defined some 'goals' for their photography for the new year... I have noticed that quite a few new people are starting photo-a-day projects.

From my recently-updated profile (today!)...

I have a few DPC-related goals for 2005. I really want to push my skills up a notch this year and try new things. The goals I've created I think keep that in mind:
1. Boost my average to 5.75
2. Have at least 3 shots that break 7+
3. Stop entering challenges just for the sake of entering. If I don't think the score is going to be 5.5+, DON'T ENTER IT.

I hope those don't sound too out-of-reach or vain. I had two goals for 2004, to win a ribbon and to have an average of 5.50. I won two ribbons, but my average is at 5.48 so I didn't meet that particular goal. I was darn close though!

John, your Hickory project is awe-inspiring. I absolutely love what you've done, and I aspire to document "living" as well as you have. As to my personal goals, I really need to sit down and come up with something concrete, but I've really been itching to get into some challenges here. I definitely want to revive my personal photography site.

That's why I didn't enter the "New Year's Resolutions" challenge. Doing so would have been breaking the only real resolution I've set myself.

I wanted to try get in on the photo-a-day thing, but it just didn't work out from a time point of view. Nobody says it has to start on January 1st anyway. At least that's what I'm telling myself... I'll still be looking into setting myself some serious goals.

Your last challenge entry is over two years old :) But I do notice that you got an upgrade from the G3 :) Maybe we will see something from you soon... You live in a photo-rich environment. Start clicking :)
