You can change the (home version at least) to YCrCb colour space, which is really LAB.

Thanks. Might that be advantageous in an analogous way to Unsharp Mask? I've never really used that technique, but I've heard it can be an improvement over doing it in RGB-space.

My computer is still out for repairs (argh) so I can't try this stuff in PS yet. Just wondering, how do I set the transparency level of a layer? And how do I 'merge' channels again after separating them?
