I want to get lens hoods for my 28-135 (Canon EW-78BII Lens Hood) and 50 1.8 (Canon ES-62 Lens Hood).

Here's the catch. I've been shooting rodeos lately and it is essential that I can use the lens hood in conjunction with a protective filter screwed into the front of the lens. I've had clumps of dirt and small rocks hit the camera/lens several times and don't want to take a chance without the UV filter on.

So, does anyone know how the hoods mount? I looked at my 28-135 and it looks like there is a bayonet style threading on the front of the lens. If this is for the hood, will the hood mount properly with a filter attached?

they mount to the threads a filter would mount to, or to the threads on the end of the filter attached.

most filters have both male and female threads so you can stack them if desired.

in most cases you can mount a filter (on the screw thread) and a hood (on the external mount - on the outside and just behind the screw thread. In general the filters and the lens hoods mount in different places.

The slight difficulty is with polarisers, particularly on lenses that rotate with zoom changes - it is a pain to adjust a polariser with a hood attached, though quite often useful, given that good polarisation is mostly found with the lens element at a good angle to give lens flare.

with my circular polarizer i attach the hood to the polariser, and can turn the polariser using the hood.? doesn't seem to be too much of a pain.

They do ? Which canon lenses and hoods do you have that are like that ?
Just curious.

None of the canon hoods that I have work like that.

I've got hoods on 24-85, 28-135, 70-200, 100 macro and a 17-40 and none of them attach to the filters.

Wow, you guys are quick! Thanks for the speedy replies. I'll be getting the hoods, I just didn't want to drop $25 to find out that they won't fit right with a UV filter attached to the lens too.

No they don't...not Canon ones anyways. There's a separate groove behind the lens threads for the hood to bayonet-mount.

canon 58mm threads, sigma lens hood.

that may be the answer to my question.

not all the canon lenses have the groove to mount the hood to.

yup, my cheapie 50mm f1.8 doesn't have any hood mount.

Yeah...and the original question was how do Canon lens hoods work, which was promptly followed up with an explanation of how Sigma lens hoods work, and then a qualifier that not all lenses have hoods.

Here are some other bits of completely unrelated information, in case I've left anything out:

South Africa is in Africa.
I like pie, sometimes.
My bike is cool.

My bike is cool too. Yellow with black wheels.
I made a pie on Friday.
But I don't have a moustache.

I'm not sure about canon lenses, but my new tamron allows for a filter and the hood and lens cap all at the same time. I would suspect canon would be similar as it is nice to be able to stack so many needed items.

It goes that fast, it blew off.

christ - i didn't notice the specific model of lense hood originally.
that's what happens when you post at work... sorry for the confusion. i'll never mis-read a post again.

i could however use my sigma hood on a canon lens that lacked the bayonet mount...

at least my useless information was photography related...
