This is really a great idea and I can't wait to see what all these photographers come up with. Its a great poem and quite vivid.

Not to be contrary, and you probably don't care what I have to say, but isn't there a hell of a lot of blatant imagery here? Maybe thats the point. In order to illustrate a poem it must be a poem that has some imagery. But perhaps if the photo was to represent concepts rather than blatant imagery- a more conceptual poem. If fear, wealth poverty, boredome, unrequited love- even misanthropic behavior or lust or any number of topics was the themes in the verses to be "illustrated"- that may present a situtation where you get less literal responses, or at least where the literal poem is not so easily contrast against the photographic illustration. Just my thoughts- not meantto be negativity.

Nonetheless, I admire your pursuit of meaning and emotion in photography John. Best of luck with the project.

I'm in John ... the above is an image I finished last week, which seems at least to fit the mood :-) Not sure it quite fits my

"10 But the traveller, travelling through it,
10 May not- dare not openly view it!
10 Never its mysteries are exposed
10 To the weak human eye unclosed;"

Damn, that's a difficult assignment though.

I like the idea of profits going to the site - but then I'm not a photographer much interested in making money from my photography.

Be aware of the size/orientation requirement of 6.5" wide by 4.5" high. I need horizontals for the layout.

I had actually overlooked that requirement John - thanks for the reminder - but I wasn't planning on giving you that shot anyhow :-)

It was just to get the ball rolling with some impressions, thoughts, etc.

It's a good example :)

This poem is full of visual imagery. There are lots of opportunities for literal representations of some of those. There are also opportunities to photograph the ideas being presented. I look forward to seeing more possibilities posted here :)

ahh, John
You gave me the wrong lines, you should have given me some lines with ultimate and Thule (lines 1 or 12), since that could possibly refer to Iceland. See linky link
But, anyhow, I like my 6. I have no concrete ideas at the moment, but give me a bit of time......
Plenty of rivers and mountains here, but no toad, newts or ghouls (at least to my knowledge). :)
by repeating it often enough newts ghouls starts to sound like nude gals, but that's probably just me :) - but I like the image of nude gals by the river with mountains (and swamps and gray woods) in the BG.
see, imagination already working :)

I have to admit I'm excited and nervous about this whole project.

I'm not used to having 11 other photogs rely on my photo, in a challenge I can only let myself down.

I have some idea's and I'm glad that there is no pressure for time because I will need to do some travelling and exploration to find the site to match my minds eye.

Some extra information relevant to the project:

Edgar Allen Poe Biography 1
The Poe Museum - Richmond, VA
Another site with a lot of info about Poe
Poe Criticism
Poe Essay

I will try to find some more specific things later... If you find any feel free to post the links...

After thinking about it, I would like to ask for some assistance on the final design. My photoshop skills aren't as great as some here for sure. I need a design that meets these specs:

24"x36" (horizontal) at 300dpi
It should hold 12 6.5" x 4.5" (horizontal) photos
It will also need to include the text that goes with each phtoo
There should be a "Dreamland" title somewhere on the image as well

If anyone wants to take a stab at this, feel free :)

I might be able to help out here ... I can use an easily-changed page-layout program for the design phase ... much easuer than playing in PS.

You want each set of lines associated with the photo, right?

I would like to ask for an additional item from the photographers if possible:

Please write up a brief paragraph of so describing the photo you choose to submit and how it fits your text.. that would be a nice addition...

When you say 'horizontal' do you mean landscape in both instances?
i.e 24" high and 36" wide? 4.5" high and 6.5" wide? - or the other way around?

I would like for the overall presentation to be horizontal and each photo will be horizontal as well...

Sorry about the difference in language (horizontal versus vertical and portrait versus landscape) -but, please could you clarify what you mean by horizontal - in terms of which measurement you want the width and which the height - just to be quite clear? Thanks :-)
