what do ppl think about using a title inside a border above or below the image itself in an extended edit ..
is it even allowed .. and would ppl take exception ..

here's an example of what i mean ..

I wouldn't vote it down, but I don't think it adds anything.

And... as an aside... I think what we take are photographs, not pictures or pics. :D

We do occasionally create images when we join stuff with our photographs and photos.

But, now you've caught me on my soap box.

Beautiful photo, BTW!!

also i wasnt completely sure what you meant by this .. and i'm pretty sure it doesnt relate to my question ..

You know me well, Roz, so... you know I am a wordie.

I think pictures are :

1
: to form a mental image of : imagine
2
: to describe graphically in words
3
: to paint or draw a representation, image, or visual conception of : depict
also : illustrate

If you take an image with your camera, that is a photograph or a photo.

If you combine that photo with another photo or more media, then it could be called an image... or possibly a picture.

But, a picture doesn't come out of a camera. Cameras produce photographs. Paint brushes, etc. produce pictures.

That's my opinion.

I came to that conclusion many years ago when I started my photography business. It was not a pictures business.

I realized that it sounded unprofessional to call the results of my work as "pictures" instead of "photographs" or "photos".

But, as I said (and you already knew), I am a wordie and think words mean stuff. :D

I'm interested in your opinion about this.

And... I love that photo! I commented on the photo itself before I commented here.

It is legal to add text to your image in Extended challenges as long as it doesn't identify you as the photographer or otherwise violate the site TOS.

i definitely hear you Lydia .. well not in my ears .. but you know what i mean .. 🤣

anyway . i've never really given it a heap of thought until i read what you wrote .. i think i've just done what felt right .. without thinking .. and yes that could be a problem in other areas .. 😜

i mean i usually say 'image' when its been edited in some way .. mainly like an extended edit .. because to me its no longer an actual photograph ..
so we are definitely on the same page with that .. phew .. !! ..

and hearing you talk about pictures .. i dont think i've ever referred to any photos as a picture .. because once again .. they arent a photograph ..

so Lydia .. we are like twinsies right now .. and i'm liking it .. !! .. ❤️

i will add though .. the plebs who dont take photography seriously could call our photographs pictures without batting an eye ..
we should shoot the lot of them .. !! .. 🤣

sorry if that's politically incorrect .. its getting really difficult to know these days .. 🥲

edit to say .. i didnt realise till after i posted that excellent pun or play on words or whatever it is .. about shooting the lot of them .. thats quite funny .. !! ..
i'd actually like to know what figure of speech that is for future reference .. xx ..

I've been starting to say "My art" or "my artwork".

I started doing outdoor art shows about 5 years ago. And there were definitely people who didn't think that photography was an art form.

There's a fine art show a state or two away that does not accept photography. Photography has to be put into their craft show. But there's a craft show that won't accept photography, because that's art.

I had a lady come into my booth, and ooooh and ahhh over things. She then asked me if it was oil or acrylic. I said photography. She said:

"Oh, I was going to tell you you were really good." and walked away.

Maybe she was a painter?

Sorry, that was the closest one I could find to match that story. :-)

This is an interesting discussion regarding the way we define our creative endeavors.
As a non-native speaker, I hadn't previously given a moment's thought to how I should translate the product of our creativity. In German, *Bild* (usually translated as "picture") serves as the umbrella term; it can be painted, photographed, or created in any other way. It can even exist solely in someone's mind. *Fotografie* is clearly defined—it was created using a camera—just as *Gemälde* is: created with a brush or pen. Although *Bild* is not, in itself, a derogatory term in German, I must admit that *Fotografie* sounds more professional and carries a greater sense of value.
I will make sure to keep this in mind when translating in the future.

Sorry, Roz—just a quick note here regarding your original question:
Unless the title is particularly striking, humorous, or clarifying—or otherwise adds some distinct value to the photograph—I would tend to find it rather distracting. There are challenges such as magazine cover, advertisement, book titls, or postcard—here a title is indispensable. Otherwise, the photograph itself should speak so eloquently that it requires no title at all.
