So when you have a challenge called "Outside the Box Still Life II" and you see comments left on photos that say "I usually don't associate living things (people, animals, etc.) with still life imagery", how do you process that? It seems that the person leaving the comment prefers inside the box and pinged you for not being inside the norm of what a typical still life might include.
Oh well.... so much for advancing one's artistic vision....
neat little boxes. well.. neat little shiny boxes.... that is always a safe bet. |

For the record, John is referring to comments I left on two entries for this challenge.
I stand by my comments, in this case specifically about people/animals in a still life image. You can be "Outside the Box" with inanimate objects. Simply my opinion. Like it or leave it. No biggee. I've made a point of trying to comment on all entries recently since comments are far and few between nowadays. Sometimes it nothing more than a simple "LOL", or a smiley face, other times I'll be inspired to write a little more. Nearly always they are spur of the moment first reaction to what I'm seeing.
As for John's comment about "pinged you for not being inside the norm", well, that's an insulting assumption and borderline inappropriate. This conversation doesn't need to derail into another of many "how I vote" threads (which it will most likely - Thanks John), but since I seem to have been called out I'll say that neither of those images were "pinged", at least not by me. I gave each of them a score in the middle range, which for me is between 4-6.
So now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go comment on some more challenge entries. Care to join me? :-) |

I thought middle would be 5 and 6, or 4 to 7? The scale starts at 1, not 0 (although sometimes I wish it started at 0 ;)
To be fair to Barry he does comment a lot which cannot said about most of those on top of the Unofficial Point and Ribbon Race who enter frequently but very rarely comment. And if you don't like the comment just don't mark it as Helpful :)

No thanks. I will stick with quality over quantity when it comes to comments. I tend to comment on my favorite images that I find inspiring in one or more ways. I stand by my methods.

| No, thanks, to what? You are not on top of Unofficial Point and Ribbon Race, are you? |

No ma'am. I am not. Is that a requirement to have an opinion here? |

I think John was replying to Barry's offer to comment on all photos.
Regarding the topic of this thread, of course anyone can enter whatever they please. But "outside the box" usually means to be somewhere in the vicinity of the box. If you go so far from the box that it is not even visible, that's probably too far. For example, shooting a portrait or a street scene for a still life challenge (even with the "outside the box" clause) would be going too far. Having said that, I think the two entries with presumably animate subjects in the frame are still valid still lives, since they are primarily about an arrangement of items some of which happen to be alive. |

I think it would be nice if those on top would comment more, that's what I said, I wasn't talking about you. |
