Do you print and display your photos? My man cave office and lanudry room has five of my favorite railroad themed 16x20 prints matted and framed along the walls. Yea.. i need to dust those cobwebs out of the corner....
This is one of the trends of modern 'photography' that sorta pains me. No one prints the photos anymore. Back when I was a serious amateur photographer, I had a great Epson printer that would print 13x19 paper. I made a lot of 12x18 prints back in those days and matted/framed my favorites.
For me, a digital image is like the 'negative' where the print is the final product. Even if its a small print, it's worth printing it. The print will outlive the digital image as well. |

I still have that "great Epson printer" (3880), it's wonderful, but I also very rarely use it anymore... For one, I just don't have room on my walls anymore for large prints. I used to exhibit my photos around town every now and then, but got tired of doing it. I only would sell a few, and so those unsold prints also ended up gathering dust in my house.

I have a lot of smaller prints (5x7 and 8x10's) in my "hangout" along with a few larger prints (16x20).
This is most likely outside the scope of this conversation, but one thing I've started doing the past couple of years is printing 4x6's for family albums. It's funny, when the kids come home to visit, they'll eventually dig into some of the older albums we have, prior to the age of digital. We all enjoy that. Sitting around reliving moments. We don't do that with photos stored away on hard drives or in the "cloud". This year I printed 23 year's worth of Christmas photos going back to 2002 and put them in a new photo album that I'll give to my wife as a Christmas gift this year. |

I really enjoy making photo books. I use Blurb. I make books of our vacations, the kids, my best DPC entries year by year, and specific categories like Birds, Creative Golf Etc. I enjoy composing the hard copies and displaying them as table top books in our house. I also switch out some of my favorite prints from my Canon Pixma Pro-100 in my man cave from time to time but the ink is very expensive. My wife also likes the 4 X 6s to show off the grandkids and pets.

I like making prints, but ever since Costco closed their photo department I'm frustrated that shipping often costs more than making prints, and framing is way more expensive.
Tp build on Barry's comment I usually add a border -- partly to make it fit a standard print size -- but I also add titles and dates, which make them much more useful as archival materials. They can by posted unframed, or if people don't like the border/caption they can be framed with a mat covering the border area. |
