This was my entry:

As I wrote in the photo description, we happened to be in Java during Waisak, or Buddha's birthday, the biggest Buddhist celebration of the year. There it is organized on the grounds of Borobudur, the world's biggest Buddhist temple (you can see it in the distance). Tens of thousands of people dressed in white gathered for prayers and meditation, and we were among them. We were all seated in hundreds of regular rows, and each one of us had a burning candle at our feet. The ceremony ended with a massive hot-air paper lanterns release. It is a spectacular, unforgettable sight.

I was really torn between my entry and another shot taken some minutes later, when the festival participants started launching these hot air lanterns in the night sky above Borobudur. Here is thaat photo (and I have a whole bunch of similar ones, of course)

So I eventually decided to enter the first one. It didn't occur to me at the time that in this Expert challenge, I could've just combined the two and produce something like this

That could've scored better, would you agree?

Lev, for what it's worth, I actually like your entry better. The lanterns are really interesting, but there's a sense of mystery in the first photo and I think it gets a little cluttered with the lanterns in addition to the folks sitting down. That being said, I expected this to score higher - I thought it was one of the more interesting entries.

Lev, I second noraneko's comments. Your entry was easily in my top 3 exactly as it was. And the mystery and solemnity of the moment registered immediately for me. Had you entered the lanterns image (the vertical one), I would have been equally wowed, but the emotion of the moment there is palpably different. So the combination of the two actually flattens the impact of both images for me.

Bottom line: I think both images on their own are marvelous. But I'm very glad you stuck with your gut and didn't try combining them. :-)

Still amazed by the diversity and range in your submissions. I may have to start calling you my Obi-Wan here.

Each more stunning than the other, Good - Better - Best.. Your choice was really nice and your experience was great to see. Congratulations!
