I was thinking about the thread regarding lack of participation in general on DPC and someone mentioned people liking likes/clicks/etc. I can see that for sure, there is a segment of the population that definitely wants accolades/prizes/affirmation.
That said, what is most appealing about DPC is that you have to shoot the subject after the announcement (generally) and not just comb your drive for what fits. You have to create-often times in genres you may not be technically proficient (yet).
For me all that is great but Bobnospum takes it a step further in his comments and always says something positive and something that can be improved. I have found I not only look forward to his comments but usually thought the same thing about my own image. For instance the blacksmith I almost didnt enter because I didnt like how I had pulled in on it and had others composed much better in my opinion but the smoke was what drew me in and I didnt have in other shots. I also find myself waiting for Bobs comments on entries.
So kudos to you Bob in really trying to help others grow in their craft. There will be some that dont like that - but for many it is what we are here for.
ETA: I know we have a community of great commenters for sure! I just have noticed Bob really stepping up the critique portion of commenting which I personally have avoided doing thinking it wouldnt be received well. For that reason, I wanted to give him a shout out. Also an inspiration to me to do more of that myself.

Im with Erin. I love Bobs comments and often agree especially when he points out the negative, I could hit myself in the head because I end up agreeing with him most of the time.
Keep it up. |

I also very much appreciate your thoughtful comments Bob! Unlike many other comments that I routinely mark as "helpful", yours are REALLY helpful. |

I confess to posting that. :-)
And as to your latter point, I'm sure Bob can tell you that you will actually learn more and "get better" by making thoughtful comments than from those you receive. |

With each vote I think of what I like and would change, just not sure there are as many people on here that want to hear it. Some? Absolutely, but some are just here for affirmation and atta boys.
I also think if people look at Bobs comments it will give another view of the photo from another perspective. It reminds me of open critiques during a photography meeting where everyone submits photos blindly for critique. Sometimes you need a tough skin, but itll make you better if you are open to it. Not for everyone, except those who do it grow the fastest. |

If a comment follows the general pattern of "I like/don't like your photo because ..." people really shouldn't have a problem; those come when you tell people what the should/shouldn't have done.
Also as a reminder we have at least two tutorials (under the "Learn" menu) on effective commenting. |

Too bad the recent site update didnt include a box to invite critique from people outside of site council while in voting. There are some VERY talented photographers that are not site council that might be hesitant about critiquing without invitation. |

100% If I only looked at and thought about my own photos, life would be so boring and my opportunities to learn would be so limited.

The point is well taken that there is a learning curve in looking at the other entries besides your own, thinking about them and voicing your opinion (in the form of comments and/or votes) when inspired to do so.
Getting the comment is also helpful (and appreciated) so thanks to those who give them.
