What does a histogram tell you? It isn't really hard to interpret them once you know what to look for. Check this short tutorial at luminous landscape.
Especially the 5 zone interpretation helped me a lot.

This article was very interesting to me. He suggested setting your camera's thumbnail display to also show the histogram. Is this available only on very high-end cameras?? I cannot find this option on my camera. Anyone know if the f707 is capable of this??

The 717 can do it but not the 707.

It is something Sony forgot on the F707 (to my knowledge). They did put it on the F717, that one has a live histogram (changes when you adjust exposure prior to the shot, very, very, very useful).
Camera's like the D7-serie, several Coolpixes, G-series, 602 and all dSLR's have it. The 602 shows it in preview and playback when you push the info button for example. It is also put into cheaper point and shoots too lately.

Great article... Thanks Azrifel!
That's why I opted to get the 717 instead of saving the money on the 707. This article helps me use the feature I paid for :)

Thanks Azrifel! That does take the mystery out of the histogram for me. I have been using it all along with my G-2 as it does give me a better idea of the exposure compared to viewing on the small LCD screen.
But I didn`t have a clear understanding of what it all was telling me. That is an excellent tutorial with good examples! |
