I concur! anyone saying jacko's bugs are common should be rowshambowied.

More on topic, I've felt the frustration of losting when I thought I wouldn't. I know how difficult it is to stick to what you love when the world bashes it. One thing I've learned here is probably not what alot of people think about. But after listening, complaining, and more listening. I thought to myself 'am I really asking the right questions?' and came to this conclusion. Here it goes, You will never see a change in winners (or the types of photos that win) because the voters are the same. People love certain things, mostly what they don't have to think too hard about them. It's obvious how some people can take a sunset and turn it into a masterpiece. The photos win because they're great. I can't immitate some of the landscapes and sunsets that I see posted on here, and that's because they come from talent, not a 'photo-mill' which is implied by this post. My only suggestion is my own only hope, to have visions so moving and touching that it doesn't matter that they are outside the box. Once you touch a persons heart, it doesn't matter what you shoot. And that is why they win.

Joe.

If I'm missing the point perhaps you're failing to elucidate it.

What IS your point exactly?

That mass-appeal photos win a lot of ribbons? Well - duh!

That you don't like those kind of images? Shrug, that's a shame. Obviously a lot of people do or they wouldn't win.

That you won't enter unless there's something done to ensure your kind of photos win? Dream on.

What IS your point exactly?

Sorry, Article19, I think Kavey pretty much has you pegged. It seems your main point is to complain about the winners and to suggest you could do better, but don't care enough to try because the voters are too stupid to appreciate your contribution. I'm pretty sure that isn't true.

I totally agree. We need fewer boring, unimaginative challenges.

We need...

PIE!

Clara- want pie now!

Sure these are common subjects, and sure they often appear on the site but did it happen to occur to you that these might be common PHOTOGENIC subjects. I find it funny how set-up model shots and street candids are on this list. Okay so now we can't take pictures of people. No cars, animals, flowers, lnadscapes, and of course the elusive satellite dish.

Please don't tell me that architecture shots are all the same. Just take a look at kosmikkreepers portfolio...definitely typical (oh yea that was sarcasm). This really annoys me. Take all these subjects away and how will the beginning/amateur photographer learn? Not everyone has access to a completely new subject everyday---lets go try and photograph aliens are something. This is so childish. Anything can be beautiful and anything can be photographed---it's a free world!

Someone missed the "evil" C's:
Cellphones
CD's
and
Candles
(also cars and car parts)
BUT....Sometimes, just once in awhile, the relatively mundane is treated exceptionally well here. In other words, someone says something spectacularly different than ever before.

IF I have to sift through the muck to find a nugget of gold or trudge through the depths of darkness to recover a diamond, I will.

No, because this isn't "that" kind of site. Shots like you mentioned win for a reason...the mass appeal to the voting public that is DPC. I suggest that if you want to enter contests where the more artistic or gritty or what-have-you shots win, you go to another site and enter there.

BTW... Kavey is right on the money, and for that matter, so is Clara! :o)

I'm not sure a comprehensive voting method will work for people like me. I have never had any art or photographry training, just know what I've been reading since I joined the site. And don't forget about all the younger (under 18) photographers. Hopefully I know a little more than some of them, but that means that some still don't know what little I do. How do you expect us to vote?
As far as the challenges go, I find them to be both challenging and fustrating. I submitted a picture that was bad and I didn't even like to the "wacky foods" just so the picture of my daughter wouldn't be in last place in my profile.
Also, I very rarely pick the winners. No offense to the current winners, but I find that the ones that win usually get a 7 or 8 from me, and my 10's end up with 6 averages. But not always.
Oh, and even though there are some rude people here, I try to be kind even to those that don't know what the word means.
Reads like you have more sour grapes than me. I know that I don't have the equipment that can compete with some of the camera's used here, but I'm not complaining or using that as an excuse because I've seen people win with cameras that are not as well equipped as mine.
It reminds me of what Rooster said in another thread (I forget which), "If you like the picture, that's all that matters" (or something like that). Besides, it's not like we get a monetary reward. It is all just for fun, and if your not having any I guess its time to go.

I sense from Article 19s that he sesudden silencees his err and has gone to retreat. I am also guilty of puting my foot in my mouth so I'll do the same for him as someone did for me and say I think he's got the point. No sense in badgering him into artistic oblivion.

mmmmm forbidden donut.. d'oh!

Joe

edit: I guess I was wrong, while I was posting he was suggesting a refund. Guess you can't help some people.. Party on!

This, my folks, is why the Rant folder doesn't appear on my recently posted list.

It's like closing the door on a whining baby, but less mean. :-p

Thanks Eric for directing me to that jackass's profile. I am ashamed I tried to stick up for someone so obviously out for blood. I am also sorry to everyone that has ever commented on my photo that I thought was being mean. View article 19's profile and read some of the comments it's left. I can only hope every vote he ever made was not counted as obviously he didn't try too hard to do anything but insult people. Damn.

for what it's worth:

this is a rather mainstream entertainment website. this site does not purport to change the world, or even a small part of it. this experience is intended to be fun. It provokes you to challenge yourself. It gives you something to do with your time ;).

(Remember: process, not product).

The way that this site works - taking a wide and rather affluent demographic and using that as a judging body of appeal - is always going to produce final results that are as centric as possible to the tastes of that demographic.

However, just because there are 'winners', ie highest average rating, doesn't mean other images werent entered into the challenges that may have more niche appeal. And they, my friend, are there for the finding! The beauty thing about this site is that there are alot of ways to build community here. You can certainly build your own select fan club here without winning ribbons ;).

Bottom line, it's an entertainment site more than a deep philosophy site. But you can build your own niche here. Believe it or not, there are really are other web sites though where niche stuff gets FAR STRONGER response. For your own sake, you should check into those.

Peace

f*** tact you morons just gave the same image a win in 2 completely unrelated challenges, your just f****************** moronic! it's unbeleivable, now hush, run along and play with your filters!

11/15/2004 07:38:54 PM · #45
I understand what you are saying but I am reminded that I am here for my own growth as a photographer and not for winning ribbons.

yes... i've been here over a year and haven't won a ribbone yet, but the challenges give me a ... challenge.. ahem... and topic, and i'm getting better at photography.

lets say you are getting paid by a client to do a single photograph... easy to please one person. BUT here at DPC the client, is a ton of people with different tastes. hard to appeal to the masses even if you have rockstar photographs.

i'm having fun. ;)
