Below is the brief, are you saying this is archival or was that a miss print?

The challenge here is to take two or more images and combine them into a single, cohesive statement. This challenge isn't meant to be about using bits 'n pieces to create fantastical images as much as it's about combining archival images in an old-schoolish sort of way.

Pretty sure this was an admin just copypasta'ing the description from Composite II...

Probably correct, but I would love it to be archival.

They surely wouldn't want to DQ anything using archival components when it's worded like that!

Can someone from Site Council let us know? I̢۪d love to play with old pictures, but I don̢۪t think I̢۪ll have time to shoot anything current.

I've corrected the settings to add archival to the challenge. My bad!

Could we get examples? Is this a Mark Wiley challenge?

I'm still a bit confused.

Allow me to explain. You need to combine images into a single, cohesive statement in an old-schoolish sort of way.

So, for example, a single, cohesive statement is "I'm a bad boy" and an old school is Yale, so you could combine your images into a picture of George W. Bush throwing up at a frat party.

Also, I'd like to share my opinion that the description in question is ... not particularly cohesive.. LOL..

I think the best idea is to just look at Composite II - which was where this description first appeared...

But really - this mostly just seems like an archival version of the Extended Free Study to me. *shrug*

At first blush perhaps yes, but really not. It's actually damn difficult to really get that "cohesive whole" from two disparate images, and therein lies the challenge.

ETA:
Just wanted to make sure everyone reads it as "composite", not "compost" ;-)

I think compost is a perfect example of disparate things being brought together into a cohesive whole ...

Well that is plant food for thought!

I still don't understand this description. I looked back at the prior challenge (thank you, Cory!) and most of the high rankers are lovely, but they aren't "believable scenes". They are creations... not "old school" images. They are more "fantastical" images that could not happen in real life.

Please explain it to me in a way that a five-year-old would be able to understand. :D

I think the site Council should get rid of that description, in my humble opinion.

Check out Jerry Uelsmann for the premier display of old-school compositing. Astonishing work. All done with multiple negatives and an enlarger, in the darkroom. An absolute master.

It worked well enough the previous times the challenge ran. Besides, changing it now would not be the responsible thing to do in considering those who've already entered an image.
