The former 5th-place entry in the "Cardboard Box III" challenge has been disqualified because it did not follow the artwork rule:
Originally posted by Common Editing Rules: You may include existing artwork in your entry, but photo-realistic artwork such as printed photos, monitor images or realistic illustrations must either be clearly presented as artwork or used only as a minor supporting element. Using photo-realistic artwork to simulate physical objects or backgrounds that provide the primary impact of an entry will be grounds for disqualification. |
In this case, the entire image is of a computer monitor screen displaying the artwork, but this is nowhere made obvious in the image-as-entered.
Congrats to our new HM. |

Hm, my first disqualification...
I didn't rate the words in the background as photorealistic artwork. My bad... |

I understand the DQ, but it's an amazing image regardless. One of my favorites from that challenge. |

It's not just that: it's the fact that the entire thing is seen on the screen, and only on the screen. Accordingly, we have no proof that the boxes even are yours or that they were shot within the challenge time frame. All we have as a proof image is a shot of your monitor screen. |

Yes I do understand, that you have no proof...
But I can show you how I did it nevertheless ;-) just for the sake of entertainment:
this is my partner, helping me to arrange the cardboard boxes

Aha! Boxes arranged on the screen projection. I think the SC should rethink the DQ, this is not a direct shot of a monitor screen, the boxes are real! |

Well, there's still the issue of whether the text superimposition is "photo-realistic artwork to simulate physical objects or backgrounds that provide the primary impact of an entry". But it IS an interesting conundrum. I'll bring it up in SC discussion. I'm torn... I'd love to reinstate the image if the rest agree :-)

I thought this technique had been used for photos before. I could see how you thought it was a photo of a computer screen, but I think this offers enough proof that itâs not. I vote for reinstatement
I thought someone had done this with text over someoneâs face. I canât remember who or what the challenge was. I know Iâve thought of doing it before, but never followed through.
anyone remember what challenge had a face with something projected on it? |

I remember there was a lot of discussion over this photo that was a monitor photo, albeit with some saran wrap and Mylar placed in front.

The image has been reinstated :-)
Please note that the photographer provided only processing details, no mention of the setup at all, and the original only showed what seemed to be a monitor capture. The setup shot in this thread makes it a whole different piece of pie :-) A stack of boxes with a very creative lighting setup, terrific! |

Ohhhh so happy about this - thank you!
To me it was so obvious what the setup was, that it didn't occur to me to send you the additional picture of it or even to mention it in my description. IF I will ever make something similar again I will know better.
Sorry for all that mess and inconvenience! |

I like the set up shot better than the entry! It is fabulous. I can totally see where the SC were coming from though, and it is great that you posted the set up shot and got reinstated. |

So glad it was not DQed. It was one of my favorites in the challenge.
But honestly, I am never sure what is and isn't allowed. I always go for "safe" .. :-(.
I read the discussion around La Llorona that Venser posted below - That sounds super creative. Wow!! I love it how people come up with clever ways to create a shot. |
