How about, "You may add a simple, tasteful border to enhance the outside edge of your image. Too much enhancement will result in a heated forum debate. Any user found to have no taste will have their account suspended until proof of eye exam is provided." |

I think 'tasteful' would be an excellent word to put in the rules :)

Gordon .... perhaps the point he's trying to make is this "new rule" could help to hold the entire site to a certain "standard of presentation quality".
Kinda like having to wear a tie at certain restaurants.
... perhaps he just thinks they're way kewl!

Check out this ultra-sweet mega-cool legal border:
Should I do them both in one tutorial? |
While you are obviously free to express your creativity any way you feel fit, I don't quite get the problem with these. Yes they are legal under the current rules. (though may meander in to artwork and clip art for this new one)
But - so what ? I might think they are hideous, and vote your whole picture low. I might love it and want to buy one. I've seen worse for sale as borders around real photo greeting cards.
You don't need a new rule to arbitrate taste or lack of it. So I don't quite get the point of these. |

Yes, the rules need a lot more subjectivity, with words like "simple" and "tasteful" and less objectivity (like the wording of the proposed border rule). That way it can be even more unclear to new users what you can and can't do. |

First time I've heard of the patrons picketing an establishment to implement a dress code. |

I vote âNOâ even though I donât know how to manipulate boarders. I use simple boarders when I feel it helps the photo in this case .
Without the boarder it would lose some of its impact on the right side of the image. But if I knew how to create [with efficiency] these types of boarders in question I would if it helps describe the meaning of the image. A great example is this image. The see through boarder helps show the strike zone to me.

Exactly... add 'pretty' and 'emotional' and 'thought provoking' to that list while you are at it...

"You may add a single rectangular frame, with or without inline and no more than 12 pixels wide, to the outside edge of your photo. Violators will be forced to use film."
No ambiguity there. ;-) |

Still at a loss Eddy. What's unclear about the current rules on borders ? Who are these new users that are so confused ? BradP ? e301 ? It seems like a rule change in search of a reason right now.
The only 'problem' I see is someone creatively enhanced an already good image and some folk seem put out that they didn't think of it first. It was fine 6 months ago when it was allowed then. It isn't like some huge cadre of new users have shown up with pink squiggly borders in tow, dragging the site down to a toys'r'us level.
If the SC are DQing vast quantities of new users each week that we aren't hearing from, I'll happily support the new rule. But until then, lets talk about the actual issue and not make up random strawman arguments.

My comment was on the general problem of "subjective rules" (ones that are described by terms like "simple" and "tasteful") when compared to objective rules which are not open to "debate" or "personal opinion". With objective rules ("Text is not permitted anywhere on your submitted photo"), it is easy to understand, and easy to enforce.

Ah - so the border rule isn't unclear as stands then.
So what's the reason to change it ?

I vote for closing this thread. "Tasteful" is too subjective and dependent on the gaudy and twadry tolerance. To the gaudy simple is grotesque to the more conservative. |

The word "tasteful" was intentionally chosen as a joke BECAUSE it's so subjective. Lighten up! |

No deep passion here. lol I have just noticed from reading all entries that the word tasteful was indeed used in its serious tone by many. I do understand the sense of humor, I just wanted to address those that feel that tasteful can be defined. I guess you all did it better with the sense of humor. Dense little me. lol |

it's pretty close.
I think this is so stupid. why i hear the arguments & all on the latest discussions on consistency & all with BradP's 3rd place win but are we really gonna ban borders?

For what it's worth, I usually use a single line and some whitespace around a photo. But.. imho, the presentation is part of the image I want to present and as such I resent the idea that borders should be forbidden just because others don't like it. Vote me down, but don't tell me how to present my photos.
